Discussion Paper Identifies Topics for CEPA Review Update

On May 16, 2016, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change provided the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development with a discussion paper outlining topics to be addressed as part of the upcoming comprehensive review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999).
Topics include:
- reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions;
- protecting Canadians from toxic substances and living organisms;
- new substances and activities;
- preventing water pollution from nutrients;
- preventing marine pollution;
- preventing pollution from the transboundary movement of hazardous waste and hazardous recyclable material;
- preventing and responding to emergencies;
- supporting environmental protection related to federal activities and on federal and Aboriginal lands;
- updating regulation-making provisions; improving information gathering provisions;
- strengthening enforcement; facilitating intergovernmental cooperation; and encouraging public participation and removing administrative barriers.
