Water Haller: On to 2025!?

2024 was a rather monumental year for the CWWA. First and foremost, we hosted a tremendous World Water Congress in Toronto, welcoming water leaders from around the world. We followed that up with another strong National Conference in Winnipeg in November. Meanwhile our committees were on top of all things water at the federal level providing submissions on the Drinking Water Guidelines, PFAS, biosolids, energy, cybersecurity, climate change, flushability, the budget and more.
2025 should be very interesting as it seems we are destined to have an election, and likely a new government early in the year. (I am writing this on the day of Finance Minister Freeland’s resignation as political pundits predict the sky to fall). I expect Canada will survive regardless of the election results as the range of politics in Canada is not as wide as in the US. It is hard to say what a conservative government will do differently with regards to our sector, but hopefully they see great value in having safe and reliable water and wastewater systems across Canada. CWWA has been in conversations with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) on how to make water and wastewater infrastructure part of the national debate. If the election is to be about the economy and affordability, then water has to be part of the conversation.
I know Thanksgiving was in October, but I’d like to end the year by expressing my thanks for all the support I have received through this long and exhausting year. I have to start with the CWWA staff, Adrian, Kara and Louisa, supported by Isabel, Cherry, Shannon, Lynne and Kristina. Then I am thankful for the unwavering support of our Board of Directors and their recognition of the value of hosting the World Water Congress. Finally, I thank all the volunteers on our many CWWA committees for their dedication and to all those that helped with the World Water Congress and the National Conference.
Happy Holidays! I’ve attached this year’s family picture that goes in the Christmas cards that aren’t getting mailed this year. J See you all next year!!
