Regulating Groundwater a Key Component of Modernized Water Act

BC Premier, Christy Clark has ordered the completion of consultations on the province’s proposed new Water Sustainability Act with the intention of passing new legislation in 2014.

According to the government, the new act will update and replace the existing Water Act, respond to current and future pressures on water, and position BC as a leader in water stewardship. Regulating groundwater, which is not currently regulated in BC – along with licenses and charges for large groundwater withdrawals – will be key components of the new Water Sustainability Act.

Work on the proposed new act was started in 2009. In 2010 the ministry released Water Act Modernization Discussion Paper. More than 2,200 written submissions from individual citizens, First Nations organizations, and stakeholder groups were received before the comment period closed on April 30, 2010.

Access the discussion paper online.
