Environment and Climate Change Canada posted online January 4, 2016, Guide for Reporting to the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI), 2014 and 2015. The NPRI reporting requirements for the 2014 and 2015 reporting years were provided in the Notice with respect to substances in the National Pollutant Release Inventory for 2014 and 2015 published in Canada GazettePart 1 July 12, 2014 edition.

The reporting guide is intended to help facility owners and operators in understanding the NPRI reporting requirements and in determining if they are required to report to the NPRI. The guide provides a general overview of the reporting requirements for all NPRI substances plus information on additional guidance materials that address specific sectors, activities, and substances.

The deadline for reporting to the NPRI for the 2015 calendar year is June 1, 2016. 

Several changes to reporting requirements have been made and are in effect as of the 2014 calendar year.

 

Substances Added to the NPRI Substance List:

• 2-(2-Methoxyethoxy)ethanol (Chemical Abstracts Registry Number (CAS RN) 111-77-3) has been added to the list of Schedule 1, Part 1, Group A substances (10-tonne mass threshold, 1% concentration threshold).
• Thallium (and its compounds) has been added to the list of Part 1, Group B substances (100 kilogram mass threshold, 1% concentration threshold).

Reduced Thresholds: Eight substances or substance groups have been moved from Part 1, Group A to Part 1, Group B. The mass threshold for these substances has been reduced from 10 tonnes, and in some cases the concentration threshold has been reduced from 1%.
