On October 21, 2019, Justin Trudeau and the liberal government won the federal election but the slim victory means the liberals will form a minority government. The new Cabinet is to be announced on November 20, 2019 and will be covered in the December issue of the Bulletin.
For the first time, the environment and climate change played a major role in determining the election’s outcome. The Liberal Party won no seats in the two western-most Prairie provinces, Saskatchewan and Alberta, where provincial Conservative governments continue to resist the federal government’s carbon tax. However, the Liberal’s slim margin will be enough to ensure that Trudeau’s marquee environmental policies – including the national carbon tax and the new Impact Assessment Act – will likely remain on course for implementation over the coming months.
