Government posts latest Environmental Sustainability Indicators

The Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators (CESI) program provides data and information to track Canada's performance on key environmental sustainability issues including climate change and air quality, water quality and availability, and protecting nature. The environmental indicators are based on objective and comprehensive information and convey environmental trends in a straightforward and transparent manner. The Government has released results for several indicators including the following:

• water indicators – This indicator shows progress towards ending all long-term drinking water advisories on public water systems on reserve.
• Nutrients in the St. Lawrence River – These indicators provide the status of phosphorus and nitrogen levels along the St. Lawrence River.
• Releases of harmful substances to water – The mercury, lead and cadmium releases to water indicators track facility-based releases of these substances to water.
• Emissions of harmful substances to air
• Municipal wastewater treatment - Over the 2013 to 2017 period, the proportion of the population served by municipal wastewater systems remained stable at 86%. view the detailed results
• Species at risk population trends
• Changes in the status of wildlife species at risk
• Eelgrass in Canada
• Plastic particles in the Northern Fulmar
