CWWA News
We know that the CWWA is not really known for its work with young water professionals, but we really do play a strong supporting role. First, we always say that “if” you have to choose between your provincial/regional association or CWWA (your national association), you have to choose your local first. You start with your individual membership in WEF and/or AWWA where you build your local/regional network, understand your provincial/territorial legislation and gain the specific training and educational hours you require. Each of the regional associations across Canada have much longer histories than CWWA and they all have active committees for young professionals that provide unique networking and mentoring activities.

On September 21, 2023, Environment and Climate Change Canada announced $8 million in funding toward flood mapping and climate adaptation. These projects are important to help for better municipal planning and understanding how climate change will impact water sources and receiving bodies. Statistics Canada is developing a Census of Environment to catalogue ecosystems in Canada, track their size and condition over time and measure the ecosystem services provided. The project will catalogue ecosystems in Canada, tracking their size and condition over time and measuring the ecosystem services provided such as clean air, food and recreation. This important program will inform decisions that will help protect, rehabilitate, enhance and sustain our environment and provide the information needed to understand the benefits of Canada's ecosystems. The project is in it’s early stages, and Statistics Canada is currently consulting on the project. Individuals who wish to obtain more information on this engagement initiative may contact Statistics Canada by email at consultativeengagement-mobilisationconsultative@statcan.gc.ca. The CSA Group have recently developed an easy-to-use, step-by-step guide that can help municipalities implement national standards for water management and better protect their communities from the impacts of flooding. According to the CSA, “this guide can help urban planners, managers, and elected municipal officials understand the standards they can leverage and use to support their municipal objectives. The guide also includes sample language municipalities can use when referencing standards in their policies, bylaws, and municipal documents”.
