Released last month by the Canadian Water Network’s Canadian Municipal Water Consortium, the document discusses integrated risk management; full cost recovery and financing; wastewater resource; recovery and beneficial use of biosolids; and resiliency to storms and extreme weather. Proposed Red Tape Reduction Regulations, pursuant to the Red Tape Reduction Act, were published in the June 27, 2015 edition of Canada Gazette Part I. The Red Tape Reduction Act, which received royal assent April 23, 2015, establishes a ‘One-for-One Rule’ whereby an existing regulation must be eliminated every time a new regulation is introduced.

Health Canada and Environment Canada conducted a joint scientific assessment of Selenium and its compounds in Canada under section 68 or 74 of CEPA 1999, and under the Selenium-containing Substance Grouping of the CMP Substance Grouping Initiative. A notice summarizing the scientific considerations of the draft Screening Assessment (dSAR) for these substances was published in the Canada Gazette, Part I, on July 18, 2015.

The long-awaited proposed Water Act discussion paper was tabled by the P.E.I. government in the legislature Wednesday. The use of P.E.I.'s groundwater has come under scrutiny as the potato industry has pressed the government to lift a moratorium on high-capacity water wells for irrigation and that is what set government on this path.

Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) has announced that, as of June 1, 2015, proponents will be expected to submit wetland-related Water Act and Public Lands Act applications in the so-called "White Area" (i.e. the settled areas of Alberta) in accordance with the Alberta Wetland Policy. This action coincides with the beginning of the field season for conducting wetland field assessments. Implementation covering the remaining "Green Areas" will begin in 2016.

The Alberta Wetland Policy is designed to provide the strategic direction and tools required to make informed management decisions in the long-term interest of Albertans. Where development activities have the potential to impact wetlands, the wetland policy promotes avoidance and minimization, as the preferred courses of action. Nova Scotia’s Minister of Environment, Randy Delorey, approved May 14, 2015, Nova Scotia Watercourse Alterations Standard - For Watercourse Alterations under Notification Process. The standard - effective June 1, 2015 - presents the minimum requirements that apply to watercourse alteration activities for which notification must be provided under NS Reg. 47/95 Activities Designation Regulations.
