One of the most common failure modes for dams is overtopping due to inadequate spillway capacity. There are numerous solutions to increase spillway capacity and these solutions need to be considered in the context of potential risks from increased spillway flows, hydraulic and structural performance of all spillway elements, and construction cost, schedule and risk. The USSD Hydraulics and Hydrology Committee just published a white paper that includes good practice for spillway capacity upgrades, including several case histories.
The USSD-developed FEMA guidance document is moving forward with public release of the final draft expected in April. An open comment period and a roundtable discussion hosted by the Tailings Committee will provide opportunities for industry input. Stay tuned for more information.
