Annual Conference Legacy Lecture Ellen will discuss a career focused on the analysis of extremely large floods. The practical value of this work is clear: dams need to withstand extraordinary hydrologic events. Its professional challenges and rewards come from being part of industry progress towards a logical, consistent, and technically informed approach to deciding what is “extraordinary” enough – while studying a natural phenomenon that is chaotic, unpredictable, poorly documented and enormously complex.

Grab your colleagues and join us for a run (5K) or walk (3K) around Seattle to raise money for the USSD Kim de Rubertis Scholarship Program and have fun in the process! This year participants will break into groups based on speed preference (welcome runners AND walkers) and be led on a guided tour of Downtown Seattle.
As part of this event, we are creating a unique and memorable first-edition medal for 5K/3K participants. Nominate a dam in Washington State that you believe deserves to be featured on this special medal!

On April 3 and 4, 2024 in Louisville, KY, the United States Army Corps of Engineers’ Risk Management Center is offering two sessions of DLS-102: Introduction to USACE SQRA and FERC L2RA Process and Guidelines.
Course Overview: Explore how the United States Army Corps of Engineers Risk Management Center (USACE RMC) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) prepare, calculate, and evaluate the results of semi-quantitative risk assessments (SQRA). The training will focus on the USACE SQRA and FERC Level 2 Risk Assessment (L2RA) process, the calculations and information required to complete an SQRA/L2RA, and how the SQRA/L2RA results are used by USACE and FERC.
Leaning Objectives: By the end of the training, participants will have a basic understanding of how to approach each element of SQRA and L2RA. In addition, participants will be able to:
- Describe the general SQRA and L2RA process and how it fits within USACE’s and FERC’s risk management programs
- Calculate risk and use it to inform decisions
- Identify and participate in each phase of SQRA and L2RA
Target Audience: This course is designed for technical staff inside and outside USACE and FERC who will be participating in or leading the SQRA/L2RA for a variety of purposes. Participants with other backgrounds or goals may also benefit from understanding the overall process and what is involved to complete an SQRA and L2RA.
Visit the RMC Training website for more information.
