The price of materials and services used in nonresidential construction inched up 0.2% from June to July, while a government index that measures contractors’ bid prices fell by 1.4%, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America released today. Association officials said contractors are finally seeing some relief from recent supply chain problems and price escalations, but the competitive market means key materials are still very hard to find. - AGC of America
Feds are cracking down on financial fraud in the construction industry. The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, part of the U.S. Treasury Department, issued a notice to financial institutions Wednesday, highlighting an increase in state and federal payroll tax evasion and workers’ compensation fraud by U.S. construction businesses. State and federal tax authorities lose hundreds of millions annually to these types of schemes, according to the announcement. - ConstructionDive
The University of Texas' (UT) new Austin Medical Center campus is preparing for construction of two new medical towers costing an estimated $2.5 billion, UT System Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife said Monday. The regents are still in discussions, officials said, as to the final investment total. The new facilities will be built on the site of the existing 1970s-era Erwin Center arena, located near Interstate 35 on the east side of the Austin, Texas, campus. The center will be demolished in phases, according to a local media report, and work has already started. Demolition should be complete by the end of 2024. - The Construction Broadsheet

A suicide occurs every 12 minutes in the U.S. A CDC study found that in 2012 and 2015, suicide rates were highest among males in the construction industry. A major roadblock to addressing this issue is the stigma that has surrounded the issues of depression and suicide and the reluctance to talk about it. For many years, these have been taboo subjects, making it all the more difficult for those who may be contemplating suicide to get the help they need. What can safety professionals, supervisors and employers do to help prevent suicide and get workers the resources and assistance they need?
