Chairperson, 2022 Events Industry Council
I am past the mid-year of my term as Chairperson of the Events Industry Council, and we are reaching one of my favorite times of the year. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, fall is rapidly approaching and with it the unbearable heat we have experienced here in Texas, and other parts of the world, will end and cooler temperatures will arrive.
Another favorite time during fall is the Events Industry Council’s Global Awards Celebration. I have been attending the Global Awards ceremony since before it was called Global Awards! The Hall of Leaders represents, to me, the best of the best in our business events ecosystem. These are leaders in the industry who will leave, or have left, a significant legacy. I enjoy hearing their life stories and accomplishments. Some are shrewd and own their own very successful business, while others have made a substantial difference at their company or association. Over the years, I have noticed leadership characteristics that are common to each:
- They are passionate about their work and believe strongly what they are doing is making a difference.
- They give freely of their time as servant leaders, giving back to the business events industry and the associations representing the industry. They do not just talk about getting something done. They get it done.
- They are active in their communities making them better places.
- They mentor and empower the next generation of leaders. They provide people with opportunities to learn and grow in their leadership journey.
Some award winners will bring their families to the Global Awards Celebration. Watching them see their family member being honoured is sure to bring a tear to my eyes again this year. We are in a time when the level of uncertainty in our lives and work can be overwhelming, and mentally and physically draining. We need to celebrate the good times and recognise accomplishments. I look forward to celebrating all the award winners in October, and I hope to see you there!
