A new client shot me a text trying to get her hands on her rooming list. She was out of Saturday night rooms due to a soft shoulder night that traditionally had very light pickup as exhibitors and attendees rushed back home to their families, which was now full. The hotel was quoting $600 per night to secure additional inventory. The group rate was sitting at $199, and attendees were clamoring to extend at the group rate. The only option was to start removing attendees without a confirmed registration to avoid last-minute wash and to maximize the block on those guaranteed shoulder nights with confirmed and paid registrants. The problem? Our assigned CSM was also working front-of-house positions to fill in for staffing shortages across the hotel. They were almost never at their desk.

With hotels, sports and performing arts, and restaurants and bars among the top 10 industries hardest hit by the pandemic, it is no surprise that shut-downs and stay-at-home orders dramatically impacted non-profits who rely on these industries for their fundraising efforts. Indeed, 2020 was a year fraught with a necessity for creativity in this arena, as organisations scrambled to find alternative ways to fund their programmes and operating needs. The old saying necessity is the mother of invention reigns supreme, we all learned, in that many groups figured out how to fundraise quite effectively in a virtual world.

I was born and raised in Bielefeld, Germany, and am now living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
What was your educational field of study and, if notably different from what you do, what is your how/why story?
I studied International Business and Management with a major in Business Events at the University of Applied Sciences in Osnabrück, Germany. Due to the university being a member of ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association), I was able to do an internship in the Events Team and that’s how I entered the association industry.

Event professionals in Singapore were sent into a tailspin last week when the city state announced tighter restrictions following a spike in community cases of Covid-19. Temporary safeguards will restrict MICE pilot events to 250 pax (down from 750), and all events with more than 100 delegates will be required to implement on-site pre-event testing for all participants.

To date, this industry-wide task force has published seven accepted practices guides: B2B and B2C Exhibitions, Business Continuity, Meeting and Event Design, Health and Safety for Hotels, Workforce and Wellness, Travel and Transportation, and Resources for Destinations. Additional resources include a Code of Conduct, Principles for Recovery, Key Questions for Event Organisers, Know Before You Go, and a Crisis Communications worksheet.
