I became a “Certified Meeting Planner” in 2000. Yes, back then it was “Planner” not “Professional,” and I can say with confidence that decision was one of the best I have ever made in my professional career. It became clear very quickly how the CMP designation would benefit me in the meetings and events industry, in continuous learning and improving, in the vast network that became available, and the global support I now had at my fingertips. The knowledge that I have gained through the endless materials and resources that the CMP programme provides has had a great impact on my success, not to mention how my CMP experience has supported my leadership skills and advancement.
Every five years, I look forward to recertifying and once again making a commitment to my career and the community that has provided so much. Over the years, I have recertified four times and will again next year. The process has become so much easier, too. As we approach that time of the year where the recertification deadline is upon us, I look forward to seeing many of you take the opportunity to recertify and continue your involvement in this highly recognised industry community. The CMP is a badge of excellence in the meetings and events industry; it brings great value to your professional career. That recognition and significance is only expanding and evolving, so I’m excited to celebrate the many CMPs who continue their role as the global voice of the meetings and events industry.
In the coming months, you will hear about our Competency Profile project to update the CMP programme. This project is vitally important to the future of the CMP as it helps chart the path for the relevance and longevity of the programme. Soon, we will ask for your input via a survey that will help define the specific content areas we know as the CMP International Standards. The end result of this project will be a refreshed CMP programme that will launch in 2024.

After executing a great event, you can find Cynthia MacDonald, CMP, recharging on the beach before setting out to plan her next meeting and event experience. She grew up planning spectacular parties for her family and friends. As an adult, she has built an illustrious career as a meeting and event planner.
She now works as a travel operations manager at Cascadia Motivation, a company that helps organisations develop, create and execute relationship enhancement programmes and events for their employees. She lives in Ontario, Canada, close to where she grew up.
MacDonald spoke to Smart Meetings about how the CMP has been rewarding to her career, noting that “It makes a huge difference with employers who want to know that you understand the business. About the SEPC
In 2022, EIC launched its interactive, accessible, online SEPC programme for events professionals interested in accelerating sustainability and social impact in their organisations and global business events. Developed by a globally diverse group of business events industry leaders and experts in the areas of sustainability, social impact and event management, this highly interactive and accessible format takes users on an engaging, insightful and easy-to-follow journey.
The SEPC covers 16 modules that include understanding the business value of sustainability, improving environmental performance of meetings and events, and effective methods for achieving social impact goals. As part of the programme, participants will have access to a digital workbook with activities to customise a roadmap for their own sustainable event. Participants in the programme earn 12 hours of Continuing Education credits (CEs) toward CMP application or recertification, and or 12 CAE credits.

To date, this industry-wide task force has published seven accepted practices guides: B2B and B2C Exhibitions, Business Continuity, Meeting and Event Design, Health and Safety for Hotels, Workforce and Wellness, Travel and Transportation, and Resources for Destinations. Additional resources include a Code of Conduct, Principles for Recovery, Key Questions for Event Organisers, Know Before You Go, and a Crisis Communications worksheet.

This month, the Events Industry Council (EIC) released its quarterly Global Events Barometer for Q2 2023, which indicates a second consecutive quarter of an increase in hotel room nights and business event RFPs.
As indicated in EIC’s 2023 Global Economic Significance of Business Events Study released in May, global business events continue to recover from the impacts of the pandemic. A critical piece of that study is understanding the events industry’s recovery as well as where the industry is heading.
As a companion to that research, EIC’s quarterly Global Events Barometer addresses the need to monitor our progress over time and by key global regions and countries. EIC’s research partner, Oxford Economics, created the Barometer and uses data provided by Amadeus Hospitality, Cvent, the Global Business Travel Association and STR Global to monitor the changes within the market relative to pre-pandemic levels.

Business meetings prove resilient and face-to-face interaction is paramount
The Events Industry Council (EIC), in partnership with Oxford Economics, has released findings from its 2023 Global Economic Significance of Business Events study. This comprehensive study evaluates the full scope and economic significance of the $1.6 trillion USD global business events industry. Beyond better understanding pre-pandemic benchmarks and 2020 losses, the extensive research analysis across 50 countries includes the important “catalytic” effects or wide-reaching benefits of business events.

Earlier this year, EIC hosted more than 200 business event professionals in New York City for the in-person return of CMP Advance. Session videos will soon be available for purchase through EIC’s Learning Management System. CMPs will have an opportunity to earn CEs by viewing these educational videos.
