Chair's corner
One's career path can lead in many directions. I have been fortunate, since earning my CMP designation in 1985, to have worked in this industry among such inspirational and dedicated professionals. None of us could have predicted this year. It seems that every time we opened an email, we were thrown a new curve ball. This impacted us all personally as well as professionally. I'm very proud of the CMP Governance Commission's work this year, which was all done virtually. We found new ways to help and support CMPs through COVID relief, launched remote proctor exams, made the CMP exam available year-round, and launched the wildly successful digital badge programme. We also will introduce a new program in 2021 designed for experienced individuals whose career and dedication to the designation has remained steadfast over the years. Stay tuned for more information in the coming months. I'd like to thank my fellow volunteers for their service. While some commission members continue to serve their term, several have completed their terms, and I'd like to recognise them for their leadership and contributions: Aleka Garcia, CMP-HC, CMM; Deanna Griffith-House, CMP, PMP, CME, PCM, CMM; Leslie Jones, CMP, CAE; and Tyra Warner, CMP, Ph.D., JD. As we end our time on the Commission together, I take great pride in our work and commitment to this vibrant and vital community. I'd be remiss to not remind the CMP classes of 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 that it is time to recertify. This newsletter includes some important updates to our reinstatement policy, as well as additional information on some of the steps we've taken this year to support our community through this difficult time. It has truly been an honor to serve my fellow CMPs. I know that this year has been the toughest year for our industry in quite some time, but I take great comfort in knowing that it's our CMPs who will lead us through this. I look forward to supporting Chair-Elect Alisa Peters, CMP, CMM, and serving as immediate past chair of the commission in the coming year. We have a bright future ahead. Recertification
In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison and the Berlin Wall fell. Windows95 and JavaScript debuted in 1995. Like Y2k, some things are meant to be forgotten. But, others - like the opening of the Tate Modern in London in 2000 - are meant to last. YouTube was founded in 2005 and, in 2010, Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympics. Do you remember highlights from the year you earned your CMP? As memorable as those events are, investing in your personal and professional development makes all the difference. Did you know that studies show CMPs earn, on average, $10,000 more than those who do not have it? If you earned your certification in a year ending in zero or five, then it's time for you to go through the process again, too. You now have two options: Option A: Recertify by the deadline of 11:59 p.m. EST on 31 December 2020. You will remain as an active status CMP, which means you can continue to utilise your certification and digital badge. EIC has held the recertification fee at $225 USD this year, and will continue to do so until the 31 December 2020 deadline. Recertify now Option B: If a CMP misses the 31 December 2020 deadline, they are "lapsed," are no longer certified and are not able to use the CMP marks, or digital badge. However, you can now reinstate your certification without taking the exam if you apply for reinstatement before 11:59 p.m. EST on 31 December 2021. The reinstatement fee is $375 USD. We know that 2020 has provided a series of unique challenges for you and for our industry. We also know that the strength and health of the global events industry is going to play a key role in the world's economic recovery - and that CMPs will help lead the way With this in mind, the CMP Governance Commission updated the CMP Reinstatement Policy to allow for an extension of the reinstatement window. If a CMP misses the 31 December 2020 deadline, they are no longer certified and not able to use the CMP marks or digital badge. However, you can now reinstate the certification without taking the exam if you apply for reinstatement before 11:59 PM EST on 31 December 2021. EIC has held the recertification fee at $225 USD this year, and will continue to do so until 11:59 PM EST on 31 December 2020. On 1 January 2021, the fee to reinstate is $375 USD. The CMP community is strong, and it is vital to the growth of our industry. It is our hope that this policy change helps those who need a grace period to reinstate their CMP. IAEE announced this year’s honorees for its "Under 35" recognition programme. Troy Love, CTA, CMP, CASE, CEM, Senior Sales Manager, Visit San Antonio, received the Bob Dallmeyer Educator of the Year Award, which is presented to IAEE members who possess outstanding creativity, a positive attitude, and the ability to transfer knowledge through good communication skills and innovative teaching to promote life-long learning to exhibitions and events industry professionals.
Molly Hamill, CMP, CEM, Manager, Exhibition Sales, International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions (IAAPA) was recognised with the Young Professional of the Year Award. This is awarded for excellent professional performance by IAEE members 35 years of age or younger who have committed their time to advancing the standing of young professionals in our industry.
PCMA named 20 of the brightest and most talented global professionals from the next generation of business events leaders for its annual "20 in Their Twenties" class.
The class of 2020 represents strategists, suppliers and destinations from the Asia Pacific region, North America and Europe, including these CMPs, who will be honored at the PCMA Convening Leaders conference 5-8 January 2021.

CMP programme news
More than 400 industry peers connected online for EIC Advance in November, but it's not too late for you to experience and learn from the programme while earning up to 25 CEs toward your CMP. All content is available on demand through 31 March 2021! The programme challenged attendees to intentionally rebuild our industry better. Grounded in the EIC Principles for Recovery that align with the Sustainable Development Goals, the programme raised difficult questions for us to collectively address:
- Now that we know better, how are we doing better toward eradicating systemic racism?
- How do we strengthen health and safety through a renewed commitment to duty of care, collective consciousness and transparency?
- How are we ensuring that our events and our industry are equitable, accessible and inclusive?
- How do we address health and safety while remaining committed to our sustainability goals?
- How do we effectively advocate for the well-being of our workforce and champion for the value of our industry's contribution to society?
- How do we remain committed and inspired during this global pandemic that has affected our lives and livelihoods so deeply?
These are not easy questions, but the authentic and empathetic discussions reinforced what we know to be true: the power of human connections cannot be underestimated. You too can be inspired by the enthusiasm, insight and expertise shared by more than 400 attendees. The chat boxes for each of the sessions came to life with robust conversations, new connections and idea exchange. With dialogue and sharing like this, we have been able to learn from each other and feel that sense of connection that everyone needs right now. EIC is offering support for CMP candidates impacted by COVID-19.
Application: For those seeking their CMP credential, EIC is providing $50 USD relief on the initial application and $50 USD for the certification examination fee if the applicant has been affected by COVID-19 and was furloughed, had their position eliminated or have experienced a salary reduction. Industry news
In November, the Events Industry Council announced the appointment of the EIC Equity Task Force, which will work in support of our industry, our global federations, and the work of EIC's Centre for Sustainability and Social Impact. The task force is charged with addressing systemic racism in the business events and hospitality industry by developing a meaningful framework for action to accelerate inclusion. The work of this task force is meant to support and amplify the work of our member organisations and stakeholder partners. By creating a framework for action, we can put benchmarks in place and monitor progress on a set frequency. The task force is meant to be a catalyst for turning our vision and intentions into action. The EIC Equity Task Force will be led by Co-chairs Jason Dunn Sr., Board Chairman, National Coalition of Black Meeting Professionals, and Vice President, Cincinnati USA Convention and Visitors Bureau; and Tina Wehmeir, CMP, CAE, Chief Executive Officer, AMC Institute. "This global pandemic has illuminated the issues around equity in ways we could have not imagined 12 months ago. Continued senseless acts of violence plague our community. We must act. No longer can we just speak our truth - we must live our truth and leverage the passion, the scope and scale of this industry to create the change we wish to see and to live our values," said Amy Calvert, Events Industry Council CEO. "On behalf of the global business events industry, the EIC Equity Task Force will offer guidance and resources to identify measurable priorities that help ensure we are an industry that drives for meaningful actions that are inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible," said Dunn. "Through this enhanced collaboration, we can drive meaningful outcomes that will strengthen our industry and society, further supporting our common belief that business events drive business outcomes and build strong communities," added Wehmeir. The full task force membership, which will represent multiple segments across the events industry ecosystem, will be announced in the coming weeks. Through its volunteer-led Sustainability and Social Impact Committee, EIC will continue to work and align around key areas of focus on inclusion, diversity, equity and access.

During EIC Advance, the Events Industry Council (EIC) released the Resources for Destinations Accepted Practices Guide for Convention and Visitors Bureaux and Destination Marketing Organisations (CVBs/DMOs). It is the newest work by EIC's APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force. The new guide:
- Maps the event journey in a destination
- Provides key planning questions for CVBs/DMOs and event organisers
- Provides crisis communications resources and worksheet
- Discusses the transforming role of CVBs/DMOs, convention centres and major venues during COVID-19
- Links to global and regional pandemic communication resources
- Offers a look inside CVB/DMO practices
"Destination Management Organizations (CVBs) will continue to play a pivotal role in our recovery and remain an essential voice in this conversation as industry professionals across the globe seek to better understand the safety protocols, alliances and external factors needed to host in-person and hybrid events to rebuild our industry," said Amy Calvert, CEO, Events Industry Council. "This guide is the result of a global collaboration," said Destinations working group Chair David Kliman, CMM, President, The Kliman Group. "We're grateful to the more than 50 global destinations whose practices and policies were reviewed, summarised and curated for inclusion as part of this most recent resource." Previous releases of EIC accepted practices guides and supporting materials include Meeting and Event Design, Health and Safety for Hotels, Workforce and Wellness, Travel and Transportation. Other key supporting materials include EIC Principles for Recovery, Code of Conduct, Key Questions for Event Organisers, Air Travel Planning and Know Before You Go. The webinar presented at EIC Advance to introduce this guide is available to watch on demand via EIC's YouTube channel. The APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force is led by Co-chairs Michael Dominguez, President and CEO, Associated Luxury Hotels International (ALHI), and Kristin Horstman, Senior Director, Strategic Events, Salesforce. With representation from across the many sectors and regions of the global events ecosystem, the APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force provides a voice in planning, preparing and participating in our recovery and our future.
