The Certified Meeting Professional programme is a foundational pillar for the Events Industry Council. CMPs play a vital role in our organisation's vision to enrich lives and drive economic growth through the power of events worldwide. As a CMP, you share your passion for our industry not only through your dedication to certification, but also through your commitment to excellence in the industry. In what has been a year that none of us could have predicted, we came together as an industry. I have been inspired by the collaboration and unified spirit that has been shown across our industry. Through November, we will have welcomed more than 740 new CMPs to this community – further testament to the recognition of the value of this designation. On behalf of the EIC Board, I'd like to recognise the volunteer leaders who work behind the scenes on the CMP Governance Commission. Barbara Connell, who earned her certification in 1985 and is the longest serving active CMP, led the commission this year. This group of volunteer leaders – while meeting virtually – set out to support this community in new ways, and accomplished so much. Together with EIC, here are a few of this year's launches for the CMP programme: All of these actions were done in support of the CMP community, knowing the vital role that you all will play in our recovery. We will adapt and innovate as an industry – and that will lead us forward. EIC received the highest number of applications to serve on the CMP Governance Commission in the new year, which will be led by Alisa Peters, CMP. We will announce the full Commission in January, and would like to thank members who completed their terms:

Recertification
In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison and the Berlin Wall fell. Windows95 and JavaScript debuted in 1995. Like Y2k, some things are meant to be forgotten. But, others – like the opening of the Tate Modern in London in 2000 – are meant to last. YouTube was founded in 2005 and, in 2010, Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympics. Do you remember highlights from the year you earned your CMP? As memorable as those events are, investing in your personal and professional development makes all the difference. Did you know that studies show CMPs earn, on average, $10,000 USD more than those who do not have it? If you earned your certification in a year ending in zero or five, then it's time for you to go through the process again, too. You now have two options:
- Option A: Recertify by the deadline of 11:59 p.m. EST on 31 December 2020. You will remain as an active status CMP, which means you can continue to utilise your certification and digital badge. EIC has held the recertification fee at $225 USD this year, and will continue to do so until the 31 December 2020 deadline. Recertify now
- Option B: If a CMP misses the 31 December 2020 deadline, they are "lapsed," are no longer certified and are not able to use the CMP marks, or digital badge. However, you can now reinstate your certification without taking the exam if you apply for reinstatement before 11:59 p.m. EST on 31 December 2021. The reinstatement fee is $375 USD.

We know that 2020 has provided a series of unique challenges for you and for our industry. We also know that the strength and health of the global events industry is going to play a key role in the world's economic recovery – and that CMPs will help lead the way. With this in mind, the CMP Governance Commission updated the CMP Reinstatement Policy to allow for an extension of the reinstatement window. CMP programme news
More than 400 industry peers connected online for EIC Advance in November – but it's not too late for you to experience and learn from the programme – while earning up to 25 CEs toward your CMP. All content is available on demand through 31 March 2021! The programme challenged attendees to intentionally rebuild our industry better. Grounded in the EIC Principles for Recovery that align with the Sustainable Development Goals, the programme raised difficult questions for us to collectively address:
- Now that we know better, how are we doing better toward eradicating systemic racism?
- How do we strengthen health and safety through a renewed commitment to duty of care, collective consciousness and transparency?
- How are we ensuring that our events and our industry are equitable, accessible and inclusive?
- How do we address health and safety while remaining committed to our sustainability goals?
- How do we effectively advocate for the well-being of our workforce and champion for the value of our industry's contribution to society?
- How do we remain committed and inspired during this pandemic that has affected our lives and livelihoods so deeply?
- These are not easy questions, but the authentic and empathetic discussions reinforced what we know to be true: the power of human connections cannot be underestimated.
EIC's Centre for Sustainability and Social Impact partnered with members of the National Coalition of Black Meeting Professionals for a discussion on inclusion, diversity, equity and allyship for a stronger and more welcoming events industry. You too can be inspired by the enthusiasm, insight and expertise shared by more than 400 attendees. The chat boxes for each of the sessions came to life with robust conversations, new connections and idea exchange. With dialogue and sharing like this, we have been able to learn from each other and feel that sense of connection that everyone needs right now. For those impacted by COVID-19, EIC is providing relief in the amount of $50 USD off the rate of $179 USD for EIC Advance registration. "Congratulations!" "What an achievement!" Sentiments of support and positivity have flooded social media with the launch of EIC's digital badges for CMPs and CMP-HCs. Thanks to all who are sharing badges – more than 5,000 across social channels and emails so far – and opening up about what your CMP means to you, and lifting up others! EIC is working with Credly, the digital credentialing leader, to provide digital badges. Current CMP and CMP-HCs should have received an invitation from Credly's Acclaim platform (admin@youracclaim.com) to accept a digital badge. EIC is offering support for CMP candidates impacted by COVID-19. In April, EIC formed the APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force. More than 40 industry peers – including many CMPs – have contributed to the effort of curating tools and resources to help support our industry's recovery globally. Grounded by a vision to "share a common belief in the value of live events, and support our industry's global work force and all of the communities that depend on the business of human connections by curating, cultivating and communicating the programmes and practices that will enhance health and safety for in-person gatherings," the group has produced a library of resources: As well as other key supporting materials that include EIC Principles for Recovery, Code of Conduct, Key Questions for Event Organisers, Air Travel Planning and Know Before You Go. With the release of each resource, EIC hosted a webinar. These are all available to watch on demand via EIC's YouTube channel. The APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force is led by Co-chairs Michael Dominguez, President and CEO, Associated Luxury Hotels International (ALHI), and Kristin Horstman, Senior Director, Strategic Events, Salesforce. With representation from across the many sectors and regions of the global events ecosystem, the APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force provides a voice in planning, preparing and participating in our recovery and our future. The task force is also amplifying the story of our economic and social impact as advocates for our industry. The full roster of Task Force members can be found on the EIC website here. When 2020 hindsight is more haunting than illuminating, finding gratitude can be a challenge. But, looking back, we find reason to be grateful in remembering Timothy S.Y. Lam and the foundation (TYSLF) his family and friends created to support the hospitality industry. Mr. Lam was an adventurer who took countless journeys and cruises before passing away in 2012. In lieu of flowers, family and friends were asked to donate to a scholarship fund. A foundation to support the hospitality industry was borne from all of the contributions. It has evolved over the past eight years, but today the TSYLF supports research, education, and training in the hospitality industry by providing scholarships and grants to those seeking to advance their careers. This year, in addition to many of its current programs, the foundation created a $200,000 USD hospitality relief grant fund. Initially created for individuals financially impacted by COVID-19 in the United States, it quickly focused specifically on individuals in the Las Vegas hospitality industry impacted by COVID-19. We're grateful for the past support the friends and family of Mr. Lam have provided to our CMP community throughout the world. To date, this industry-wide task force has published five accepted practices guides: Meeting and Event Design, Hotels, Workforce and Wellness, Travel and Transportation, and Destinations. Additional resources include a Code of Conduct, Principles for Recovery, Key Questions for Event Organisers, Know Before You Go, and a Crisis Planning worksheet.
