I vividly remember my first large live meetings industry event that I attended, MPI’s World Education Congress in San Diego. I was nervous. I stayed outside the block (that still makes me smile, at the young version of me) because I loved Kimpton. The memory of having coffee spilled down the front of my nervously pressed, pristine white shirt when I went to collect my badge early, killing one of my costume changes, at a time in my career where quickly popping out to get a new one could mean no coffee for a few months on the way to work. I remember walking into my first event, I knew one face (one of my mentors, Thom Ward, who had been texting me to meet him, so he could introduce me to “my new family”) and the crowd seemed so large and intimidating to me… but the excitement and the sense of reunion was something I knew I absolutely wanted to be a part of.

An interview with SmartMeetings and Amy Calvert, CEO of the Events Industry Council Editor’s Note: We asked Amy Calvert, CEO of Events Industry Council, to share her perspective on how meeting professionals are evolving to meet the needs of post-pandemic era events and why professional designations like CMPs are changing to support that shift. Now, more than ever, we must unite to inspire our workforce and be the “great explainers and advocates” as to why our industry matters. As leaders in our industry, we all have a role to play in advocacy. To build back better, we must be anchored to our values and firm in our belief in the purpose of events; to foster human connections, build career pathways and communities, drive innovations, professional development and learning. This steadfast commitment is at the heart of what we do at Events Industry Council (EIC) and the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) credential. As we think about upskilling and reskilling and supporting our workforce, we recognize that we have a unique moment in time, given the events of the past two years, to conduct a competency profile project to future-proof the international standards that form the foundation of our accreditation program and of the CMP certification.

As the CEO of CEIR what do you find most inspiring about the work that this research represents? I’ve had a fascination with trade shows since I attended my first one in the early-80s. When I organised my first one in Atlantic City in the early 90s, I quickly understood that it’s not just about selling booth space and doing some marketing to get people to register. At that time, there was not a lot of information on how to produce a trade show. Fast forward to 2006 when I first began working with CEIR, and now as the CEO, I never would have expected to be in the position I’m in.

Recertification
You now have until 31 December 2021 to reinstate your CMP credential. Get started today by following the steps below:
- Access your CMP portal account using the email address we have on file as your Username.
- When you’re logged in:
- Review your contact information to make any necessary updates
- Update your professional experience
- Review your continuing education hours and update any additional CEs
- Pay the $375 USD reinstatement fee
- Submit the recertification application. Click the Recertify link in your online account.

This year, CMPs and CMP-HCs who earned their certifications in 2016, 2011, 2006, 2001, 1996, 1991 and 1986 are all scheduled to recertify.
You now have two options to recertify your CMP, with the deadline approaching if you would like to remain an active CMP.
Option A: Recertify by the deadline of 11:59 p.m. EST on 31 December 2021. You will remain as an active status CMP, which means you can continue to utilise your certification and digital badge. The recertification fee is $275 USD and will continue at this rate through the December 2021 deadline. After this deadline, you will pay a $375 USD reinstatement fee.
Option B: If a CMP misses the 31 December 2021 deadline, they are “lapsed,” which means they are no longer certified and are unable to use the CMP credential or digital badge. However, you can now reinstate your certification without taking the exam if you apply for reinstatement before 11:59 p.m. EST on 31 December 2022. The reinstatement fee is $375 USD.
No matter which option you choose, we hope you will continue on your CMP journey.

Call for action
There is still time to take part in our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion survey. If you haven’t already done so, please consider taking a few minutes to complete it. The survey is the critical first phase of our landmark Equity Acceleration Plan and will allow the Events Industry Council to establish a benchmark by which to measure progress for the industry through a survey to determine the current state of diversity, equity and inclusion within the workplace across the events industry.

EIC is offering a scholarship for the CMP programme made possible by a grant from the Timothy S.Y. Lam Foundation. The application fee is $250 and the scholarship covers the $475 testing fee for approved applicants. Scholarship eligibility applies to first-time CMP applicants only. To date, this industry-wide task force has published seven accepted practices guides: B2B and B2C Exhibitions, Business Continuity, Meeting and Event Design, Health and Safety for Hotels, Workforce and Wellness, Travel and Transportation, and Resources for Destinations. Additional resources include a Code of Conduct, Principles for Recovery, Key Questions for Event Organisers, Know Before You Go, and a Crisis Communications worksheet. After the release of each guide, EIC hosted a webinar with task force members to review the resources. You can access all of this helpful aggregated content via EIC's website and YouTube channel.
