Meet Loretta Yingling, CMP

December 2023 --

Loretta had considered becoming a teacher, a veterinarian or even a lawyer, she says, but “Suddenly, I just knew that was my career path. That was over 30 years ago, and I still love my chosen field.” She worked in hotels for over a decade before entering the world of CVBs. Now, she works as the national sales manager at Visit Raleigh. “18 years later, I can truthfully say I made a good choice!”

I’ve just returned from our annual EIC Board Retreat, held this year in San Diego in conjunction with PCMA Convening Leaders 2024. Congratulations to the PCMA team, Visit San Diego and the entire hospitality community for an incredible event showcasing one of the world’s most beautiful cities.

During our Board Retreat, we toasted our new Chair Ana María Viscasillas, MBA, CDME, DES, CED and welcomed new members Michelle Mason, FASAE, CAE and Elizabeth Niehaus, along with Bob Gilbert, who returns to the board after a few years.

EIC invites you to shape our industry’s future

Take the CMP survey and earn 1 CE

The Events Industry Council (EIC) invites global business event professionals to participate in a survey that will help inform the evolution of the Certified Meeting Professional standards and exam. The survey is available here through 12 November.

As the global federation that manages the CMP programme, EIC is conducting a Competency Profile project, which is done approximately every five to seven years. This collaborative project incorporates input, feedback and expertise from industry professionals via focus groups, a task force, and this survey. The result will be an updated exam and accompanying study materials to launch in 2024-2025.

Current CMPs will receive 1 CE for completing the survey. This credit will appear in your CMP profile if your name and email are provided upon completion of the survey.

“As our sector continues evolve, adapt and innovate, the CMP programme is evolving to ensure its relevance now and into the future,” said EIC CEO Amy Calvert. “The CMP Competency Profile project is critical to identifying the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for global event professionals to maximise their strategic value to their organisations in support of a relevant, equitable and sustainable industry.”

Survey responses are due 12 November.

Call for Presentations: CMP Advance 2024

Are you interested in advancing the industry with your expertise? Share your knowledge with your CMP peers at the 2024 CMP Advance, 11-13 March in Toronto, Canada at the Fairmont Royal York. The EIC Knowledge Committee is making a call for presentations via this link.

CMP Advance content continues to be aligned with the EIC strategic pillars of People, Planet and Purpose with the core programme built around the CMP Domains. Key industry trends such as sustainability and regenerative event practices, designing inclusive environments, and technological advancements will be featured and are welcome submissions from SMEs.

Sessions can follow a variety of formats, including panel discussion, interactive/experiential, workshop, lecture or other. Sessions will be 45 minutes and can include individual or multiple speakers and should focus on delivering a unique experience and high-value learning.

While CMP Advance will have ample opportunities for networking and building connections, our formal sessions should be education-focused with tangible learnings and outcomes. About the SEPC

In 2022, EIC launched its interactive, accessible, online SEPC programme for events professionals interested in accelerating sustainability and social impact in their organisations and global business events. Developed by a globally diverse group of business events industry leaders and experts in the areas of sustainability, social impact and event management, this highly interactive and accessible format takes users on an engaging, insightful and easy-to-follow journey.

The SEPC covers 16 modules that include understanding the business value of sustainability, improving environmental performance of meetings and events, and effective methods for achieving social impact goals. As part of the programme, participants will have access to a digital workbook with activities to customise a roadmap for their own sustainable event. Participants in the programme earn 12 hours of Continuing Education credits (CEs) toward CMP application or recertification, and or 12 CAE credits.

CMP Advance Session Videos Available Soon

Earlier this year, EIC hosted more than 200 business event professionals in New York City for the in-person return of CMP Advance. Session videos will soon be available for purchase through EIC’s Learning Management System. CMPs will have an opportunity to earn CEs by viewing these educational videos.

CMP Advance is designed by CMPs, for CMPs, to supercharge professional development, create an open space for peer-to-peer idea exchange and problem solving, and connect the global CMP community.

The 2023 CMP Advance programme centered around the relevant CMP Domains organised with the EIC pillars of People, Planet and Purpose. Three tracks of sessions provided an opportunity for attendees to earn 10 CEs toward their CMP recertification. Topic areas also included:

EIC Announces CMP Scholarships

Deadline to apply is 1 December

EIC announced a new scholarship programme to support business events industry professionals seeking CMP certification and recertification. Five scholarships will be awarded in January 2024.

Applications will be accepted from 1 November to 1 December 2023. Applicants can refer to EIC’s website for qualification information, FAQs and submission information. Each scholarship application must be accompanied by a 1,000-word essay and one letter of recommendation.

The CMP scholarship includes the CMP application fee ($350 USD), the exam fee ($525 USD) and study books ($204.90 USD) for a total scholarship of $1,079.90 USD. The CMP-HC scholarship covers the CMP-HC application fee ($205 USD) and exam fee ($320 USD) if the application is approved.

In alignment with the EIC Equity Acceleration Plan, EIC’s goal is to award 50 percent of the available scholarships to individuals from diverse communities currently underrepresented in the CMP community. We value diversity, and are committed to addressing all forms of discrimination, including systemic racism.

The CMP Governance Commission is the governing body that oversees the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) credential. The Commission serves the global CMP community. Consider nominating yourself or a fellow CMP to serve as a member of the CMP Governance Commission. Apply here.

EIC is now accepting applications for the 2023 Class of CMP Fellows. Launched in 2021, the CMP Fellows programme recognises and rewards CMPs and/or Emeritus who continue to make a significant investment toward the betterment of the events industry and the community of people working within it.

To be eligible for consideration as a CMP Fellow, Certified Meeting Professionals must meet the following requirements:

- Minimum of 10 years tenure as a CMP or Emeritus: Be a CMP in active status or EIC Emeritus in active status

- Career progress: Breadth and depth of experience, be that growth in one area of the industry or differentiating roles in the industry

- Industry contributions: Speaking, writing, publishing, awards

- Volunteer leadership: Serving on the EIC Board or committees, member organisation committees, or other industry organisations

- Community engagement: Mentoring or another industry-related volunteerism

CMP Fellows benefit from access to exclusive networking opportunities, peer-to-peer collaborations, and opportunities at EIC and other industry events. A full list of the new CMP Fellows can be found here.

Applications are due 31 January 2024 and the 2023 Class will be announced in March 2024.

APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force resources

To date, this industry-wide task force has published seven accepted practices guides: B2B and B2C Exhibitions, Business Continuity, Meeting and Event Design, Health and Safety for Hotels, Workforce and Wellness, Travel and Transportation, and Resources for Destinations. Additional resources include a Code of Conduct, Principles for Recovery, Key Questions for Event Organisers, Know Before You Go, and a Crisis Communications worksheet.

After the release of each guide, EIC hosted a webinar with task force members to review the resources. You can access all of this helpful aggregated content via EIC's website and YouTube channel.

The Events Industry Council (EIC), in partnership with Oxford Economics, has released findings from its 2023 Global Economic Significance of Business Events study. This comprehensive study evaluates the full scope and economic significance of the $1.6 trillion USD global business events industry. Beyond better understanding pre-pandemic benchmarks and 2020 losses, the extensive research analysis across 50 countries includes the important “catalytic” effects or wide-reaching benefits of business events.

Hosting one of the industry’s most dynamic trade shows comes with a responsibility that I believe Ray and Carina take very seriously. We are very fortunate to have a long-standing alliance with the IMEX Group and its team of caring and thoughtful leaders. Our Global Awards Celebration, as many of you know, has been held in conjunction with IMEX America for many years now. As we approached the week and our event, we spent time reflecting and talking internally about the responsibility we have, given our commitment to this industry and the professionals who comprise our sector to stand and speak out against racism, terrorism, hatred, and antisemitism.

As members of a global community, we were horrified at the senseless acts of cowardice and the murders of thousands of Israelis. We are collectively heartbroken. As we know, the aim of these injustices and the terrorist organisations is to tear us apart and divide us in the present and for generations to come. I am firmly of the belief that, based on the intrinsic value of what we do, while we definitely don’t have the answers for immediate impact, through the value and purpose our industry represents, we can indeed be a force for good.

Get to Know Constance Samuels, CMP

October 2023 -- CMP spotlight series

Constance Samuels, CMP, likes to live by the phrase, “Work hard, play harder.” Armed with her outlook, notes and events apps, her trusty three-ring binder, and a medium black coffee, Samuels leads events that go off without a hitch. Afterwards, she treats herself to some much-needed self-care and rest.

“Planning an event is not simple,” she says. “[The CMP designation] continues to solidify our existence in the multibillion-dollar event industry not as an option, but as a need.”

Growing up, she wanted to be a teacher; then, an architect. By high school, she wasn’t sure. Career aptitude tests pointed her towards hospitality. Samuels spoke to Smart Meetings about how she prepared for the CMP exam – and passed on the first try. Read more from her interview with Smart Meetings.

CMPs are the Voice of the Meetings and Events Industry

I became a “Certified Meeting Planner” in 2000. Yes, back then it was “Planner” not “Professional,” and I can say with confidence that decision was one of the best I have ever made in my professional career. It became clear very quickly how the CMP designation would benefit me in the meetings and events industry, in continuous learning and improving, in the vast network that became available, and the global support I now had at my fingertips. The knowledge that I have gained through the endless materials and resources that the CMP programme provides has had a great impact on my success, not to mention how my CMP experience has supported my leadership skills and advancement.

Every five years, I look forward to recertifying and once again making a commitment to my career and the community that has provided so much. Over the years, I have recertified four times and will again next year. The process has become so much easier, too. As we approach that time of the year where the recertification deadline is upon us, I look forward to seeing many of you take the opportunity to recertify and continue your involvement in this highly recognised industry community. The CMP is a badge of excellence in the meetings and events industry; it brings great value to your professional career. That recognition and significance is only expanding and evolving, so I’m excited to celebrate the many CMPs who continue their role as the global voice of the meetings and events industry.

In the coming months, you will hear about our Competency Profile project to update the CMP programme. This project is vitally important to the future of the CMP as it helps chart the path for the relevance and longevity of the programme. Soon, we will ask for your input via a survey that will help define the specific content areas we know as the CMP International Standards. The end result of this project will be a refreshed CMP programme that will launch in 2024.

Q2 2023 Global Events Barometer Tracks Recovery of Business Events

This month, the Events Industry Council (EIC) released its quarterly Global Events Barometer for Q2 2023, which indicates a second consecutive quarter of an increase in hotel room nights and business event RFPs.

As indicated in EIC’s 2023 Global Economic Significance of Business Events Study released in May, global business events continue to recover from the impacts of the pandemic. A critical piece of that study is understanding the events industry’s recovery as well as where the industry is heading.

As a companion to that research, EIC’s quarterly Global Events Barometer addresses the need to monitor our progress over time and by key global regions and countries. EIC’s research partner, Oxford Economics, created the Barometer and uses data provided by Amadeus Hospitality, Cvent, the Global Business Travel Association and STR Global to monitor the changes within the market relative to pre-pandemic levels.

Get to Know Cynthia MacDonald, CMP

After executing a great event, you can find Cynthia MacDonald, CMP, recharging on the beach before setting out to plan her next meeting and event experience. She grew up planning spectacular parties for her family and friends. As an adult, she has built an illustrious career as a meeting and event planner.

She now works as a travel operations manager at Cascadia Motivation, a company that helps organisations develop, create and execute relationship enhancement programmes and events for their employees. She lives in Ontario, Canada, close to where she grew up.

MacDonald spoke to Smart Meetings about how the CMP has been rewarding to her career, noting that “It makes a huge difference with employers who want to know that you understand the business. It has shown that I know all of what goes into building a successful, well-executed event.” Read more from her interview with Smart Meetings.

About the SEPC

In 2022, EIC launched its interactive, accessible online SEPC programme for events professionals interested in accelerating sustainability and social impact in their organisations and global business events. Developed by a globally diverse group of business events industry leaders and experts in the areas of sustainability, social impact and event management, this highly interactive and accessible format takes users on an engaging, insightful and easy-to-follow journey.

The SEPC covers 16 modules that include understanding the business value of sustainability, improving environmental performance of meetings and events, and effective methods for achieving social impact goals. As part of the programme, participants will have access to a digital workbook with activities to customise a roadmap for their own sustainable event. Participants in the programme earn 12 hours of Continuing Education credits (CEs) towards CMP application or recertification, and or 12 CAE credits.

· Global events industry contributed $1.6 trillion to the global GDP in 2019. The industry’s economic impact is larger than many global economies.

· Based on its $663 billion direct GDP impact, the business events sector would rank as the 21st largest economy globally.

· Two-thirds of global direct business event spending was lost in 2020; the three-year cumulative lost sales total $1.9 trillion.

· Total Participants: 1.6B

· Total Jobs: 27.5M

As a result of the pandemic lockdown, most of us transitioned quickly to delivering digital (virtual/hybrid) events rather than having no events at all. Results were mixed, some very positive, with the amplified reach to larger audiences and the rich data that digital solutions provided. A negative was the inability to engage with audiences in an in-person environment.

As the world opened up again, the assumption was that we would all return to face-to-face meetings and digital events would be used minimally; however, that is not the case.

Appreciating the Power and Purpose of Our Community

Over the past four years I have witnessed incredible generosity, passion, subject matter expertise and knowledge through the effort of our volunteer leaders. When I started my journey with EIC in May 2019, I was struck by how much the opportunity to be a part of the EIC volunteer leadership community meant to those involved.

One of the key reasons I heard often was the ability to meet industry peers from outside their traditional sphere of influence or network. This community of SMEs over the years has been directly involved in ensuring that EIC is able to fulfill its mission championing and supporting the industry through advocacy, research, professional standards and professional recognition.

One of the reasons I believe this community has been able to deliver such incredible work is that this EIC experience brings together professionals with diverse experience and backgrounds who are united by key global regions and industry sectors.

Get to Know Robert Sanchez, CMP

August 2023 -- CMP spotlight series

While growing up in Acapulco, Mexico, Robert Sanchez, CMP, dreamed of becoming a fighter pilot. He imagined himself alongside the heroes of Top Gun, living a fast-paced life, helping people through service and enjoying days on the beach.

He grew up to become one of Events Industry Council’s (EIC) proud Certified Meeting Professionals (CMP). But this profession isn’t too far off; he tells Smart Meetings that “the discipline, preparation and vision” present in the fighter pilots of Top Gun are “all essential when leading a team and planning missions – I mean, events!”

Sanchez currently works as the president and CEO of the Colleyville Chamber of Commerce and is the co-founder of S3 Global Events. He attended Texas Tech University to earn a degree in Hospitality in RHIM (Restaurant, Hotel & Institutional Management). In 2006, he earned his CMP certification from EIC.

Accelerate Accessibility and Social Impact in Your Organisation

EIC now offers an interactive, accessible, online Sustainable Event Professional Certificate (SEPC) programme. The SEPC programme is for events professionals interested in accelerating sustainability and social impact in their organisations and global business events. The programme provides guidance that will be valuable for reaffirming our industry’s commitment to a recovery that is resilient, sustainable and equitable.

The Sustainable Event Professional Certificate is eligible for 12 hours of Continuing Education credits (CEs) toward initial CMP examination eligibility or recertification. EIC is also an approved provider of CAE continuing education, and this programme offers 12 CAE credits.

Charting the Path for the Future of the CMP

July 2023 -- CEO Message

After the many learnings over the past three years, the Events Industry Council embarked on a journey to launch a Competency Profile project to update the Certified Meeting Professional programme. Accreditation programmes are evaluated on a regular basis, and the CMP is no exception. This project brings together diverse, global groups of subject matter experts to define the specific content areas we know as the CMP International Standards. These standards define and categorise the key competencies, skills and abilities that professional meeting or event planners must demonstrate to receive the CMP certification.

This project is vitally important to the future of the CMP as it helps chart the path for the relevance and longevity of the programme. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the CMP Governance Commission, CMP Fellows and all the incredible volunteers who have offered their time and expertise to support the CMP programme. Their work ensures that the CMP International Standards and Domains are relevant on behalf of this global community of event professionals. We look forward to sharing the outcome of these sessions and to a refreshed CMP programme toward the end of 2023 and into 2024.

New Tool Helps Kick-start Sustainability Journey for Corporate Event Organisers

Events Industry Council and ICE, the In-house Corporate Event planner community, have developed and launched the Action10+ initiative to provide guidance to ensure that creating more sustainable events becomes second nature to every event professional.

Designed with corporate event professionals in mind, Action10+ supports all global business professionals. ICE created Action10+ with input from its Sustainability Taskforce, which includes Barclays, Snap, S&P, Siemens, pwc, EY, Cvent, Maritz Global Events, DRPG and more, and the Events Industry Council’s Centre for Sustainability and Social Impact.

The resource focuses on specific aspects of the organisational process from ‘Venue Selection’ and ‘Waste Management & Water Conservation’ to ‘Food and Beverage,’ ‘Energy Management,’ ‘Transportation,’ and ‘Production Materials.’ It even looks at smaller items such as ‘Invitations.’ The resource also addresses how events ‘Track and Measure Event Sustainability.’

In each of these cases, it outlines what ‘Good,’ ‘Better,’ and ‘Best’ looks like, and how event professionals can reach these aims, which also closely align with EIC’s existing guidance and resources, including the updated EIC Sustainable Event Standards and Principles for Sustainable Events.

Within the guidance, and through the group that put it together, there is indication of a growing urgency from corporate event professionals on the need to take intentional action around regenerative and equitable event practices.

“ESG is now a business imperative as a reflection of organisational core value and objectives in support of their workforce and stakeholder communities,” said Amy Calvert, EIC CEO. “It is important to hear the voice of the corporate event organiser, to leverage their vast experience and perspective, and to address their specific needs and concerns. We view the Action10+ guidance as a kick-starter for a sustainability journey that includes implementation of turning our vision into meaningful and measurable actions such as the EIC Sustainable Event Standards framework.”

Business meetings prove resilient and face-to-face interaction is paramount

The Events Industry Council (EIC) in partnership with Oxford Economics, has released findings from its 2023 Global Economic Significance of Business Events study. This comprehensive study evaluates the full scope and economic significance of the $1.6 trillion USD global business events industry. Beyond better understanding pre-pandemic benchmarks and 2020 losses, the extensive research analysis across 50 countries includes the important “catalytic” effects or wide-reaching benefits of business events.

An executive summary is available on EIC’s website. Here are some key points in the research:

· Global events industry contributed $1.6 trillion to the global GDP in 2019. The industry’s economic impact is larger than many global economies.

· Based on its $663 billion direct GDP impact, the business events sector would rank as the 21st largest economy globally.

· Two-thirds of global direct business event spending was lost in 2020; the three-year cumulative lost sales total $1.9 trillion.

· Total Participants: 1.6B

· Total Jobs: 27.5M

Paola Bowman Receives MPI RISE Award for Meeting Industry Leadership

At the 2023 World Education Congress (WEC23) in Mexico in the Riviera Maya, Meeting Professionals International presented Paola Bowman, CMP, CMM, with its RISE Award for Meeting Industry Leadership.

Paola is the Director of Client Services and Events at the Arlington Convention & Visitors Bureau. As an experienced hospitality and events professional, she has worked in numerous positions, from front of the house to sales and services. She was named one of Smart Meetings Magazine “100 Women Who Inspire Us” in 2018 and was recognised in the Connect Association 40 under 40 group of 2019. Most recently, she was selected by ConventionSouth Magazine as a Meeting Professional to Watch in 2023. Congratulations on this honour, Paola!

As we approach the mid-point of this year, I am energised and encouraged by the leadership being offered particularly as we commit to turning our vision into action. It is essential that we hold up examples of the organisations and individuals modeling the way for others. In many ways, this is the essence of the CMP community: being dedicated to the highest level of professionalism within our industry and to lifelong learning.

We see this leadership take form in many ways, from everyday moments to large-scale impact projects such as our Economic Significance Study that will have a positive and lasting impact on how we tell our best story. One of the ways we hold up these examples is through our EIC Leadership Programme and Global Awards. This is the time of year where at EIC we turn our attention to the planning and execution of our Global Awards event that takes place annually in conjunction with IMEX America.

EIC and Marina Bay Sands Announce Strategic Partnership

May 2023 -- Events and Programmes

On 23 May, the Events Industry Council (EIC) announced a new strategic partnership with Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands, one of Asia’s premier business, leisure, and entertainment destinations. The three-year partnership – the first of its kind in Asia – will allow the integrated resort to deepen its commitment to event professionals and industry excellence on a global scale. Meanwhile, EIC will benefit from support for key strategic programmes, increased brand visibility in Asia, and thought leadership from a respected global industry leader.

With Marina Bay Sands playing a key role, the partnership will spur more EIC-led initiatives throughout Asia, including Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) training and other learning and development programmes. At least 100 client-facing Marina Bay Sands team members will complete EIC’s Sustainable Event Professional Certificate (SEPC) Programme, which provides the education and tools for event strategists to design and implement their own sustainable events.

“The partnership is grounded in our shared values promoting event industry excellence, building capabilities by advancing uniform standards of practice, and setting the highest standards for professional and personal growth for those in our industry,” said EIC CEO Amy Calvert. “We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Marina Bay Sands on a diverse set of initiatives that will benefit our industry and the event professionals we serve worldwide.”

Congratulations Destination Canada: IMEX-EIC Innovation in Sustainability Award Winner

EIC congratulates Virginie De Visscher and Destination Canada, this year’s winner of the IMEX-EIC Innovation in Sustainability Award. EIC CEO Amy Calvert and IMEX Group Chairman Ray Bloom presented the award on 24 May at IMEX Frankfurt where, almost one year ago, Destination Canada launched its Canadian Business Event Sustainability Plan.

The IMEX-EIC Innovation in Sustainability Award places a very deliberate focus on innovation, creative thinking, and collaboration. Destination Canada’s first-of-its kind multi-stakeholder plan is aimed at improving the economic, socio-cultural, and environmental sustainability practices of business events at a national level. Their approach looks at each of these aspects not as independent goals, but holistically, recognising the symbiotic relationship between people, planet, and purpose.

Through our Centre for Sustainability and Social Impact, EIC supports and champions the work of those who create and deliver sustainable and socially impactful practices for the benefit of all. Destination Canada and their stakeholder partners committed to action are truly inspirational.

I want to talk to you today about something incredibly important to me and many of you – inclusivity in the events industry. As someone who has dedicated their career to speaking at events and creating experiences that are welcoming and supportive of everyone, I believe that inclusivity is the key to unlocking the full potential of our industry.

An event can only be considered a success when every attendee is empowered to participate without barriers. We must be intentional about creating experiences that are inclusive and meaningful for all. Inclusivity is not just the right thing to do – it is also a smart business strategy. Research has shown companies that prioritise diversity and inclusion are more innovative, have higher employee engagement and retention, and are more profitable.

So, how can we unlock inclusivity as a force for growth in the events industry?

During CMP Advance, EIC Board Chair Sherrif Karamat presented the 2023 Chair Award to Stephanie Jones, CMP Fellow, CAE, DES, Chair of the EIC Knowledge Committee. A signature programme for EIC, the Knowledge initiative focuses on creating opportunities to expand learning and provide resources for career development that advance, elevate and educate industry professionals. This committee is responsible for converting content developed across EIC into educational content via webinars and publications. Under Stephanie’s leadership, this committee led the in-person return of CMP Advance. Congratulations and thank you, Stephanie!

Connecting as a Community, Sharing Our Story of Meaningful Impact

This past month provided an amazing opportunity to connect with and be inspired by CMPs, CMP Fellows, EIC Members, Strategic Partners, our Board and Council of Delegates, and so many business event professionals from around the world.

Starting with CMP Advance and our inaugural CMP Fellows Think Tank in New York, and wrapping up the month with IMEX Frankfurt, EIC focused on its pillars of People, Planet and Purpose to explore belonging, mindfulness and wellbeing, regenerative and sustainable event practices, negotiations, accessible and inclusive environments, digital strategies, and the future of the events economy.

Against this backdrop of interaction, idea exchange and impact that IMEX Frankfurt provides, EIC also launched the 2023 Global Economic Significance of Business Events study.

Bobby Jones, David Allison Join Keynote Lineup for CMP Advance

David Allison, Founder, The Valuegraphics Research Company, and Bobby Jones, Founding Partner, Conspiracy of Love, have joined the keynote lineup for CMP Advance, 1-2 May in New York City. On Monday morning, David will help us understand how event strategies must evolve to meet the next phase of attendee needs. The new design of CMP Advance centers around the relevant CMP Domains organised within the EIC pillars of People, Planet and Purpose. Panelists will cover some of these hot topics:

Designing Inclusive Environments: DEI is an issue that continuously requires examination, influence and active participation. While efforts are active in principle, they are lacking in practice. EIC Equity Task Force members will discuss findings and observations of the 2022 Equity benchmarking study, as well as what we know, what we learned and what’s next for DEI.

Sustainable Event Practices: Turning Our Vision into Action: Reusable water bottles, little to no plastic utensils, digital downloads and QR codes … these are examples of how sustainability has played a role in events. Representing various organisations and venues, these panelists will share the sustainable event practices they have implemented – and will help us envision what future planning methods of sustainability could look like.

Here Comes the Sun: Forecasting the Future of the Events Economy: The COVID pandemic forced us to experience many twists, turns and forks in the road. There has never been a greater need to look past the clouds. This panel will look at the permanent behavioral changes to the industry while also diving into the catalytic impact of events and the findings of the 2023 Global Economic Impact of Business Events study, giving us the tools and talking points we all need to best explain the impact and importance of our industry.

Inaugural meeting will focus on current and future industry issues

Immediately following CMP Advance, the Events Industry Council will host the first CMP Fellows Retreat and Think Tank. Led by Terri Breining, CMP, CMM, CED, President of Breining Group Inc., this retreat provides CMP Fellows an interactive opportunity to identify the most effective use of our collective voice, adding our perspective to an industry continuing to evolve.

The retreat and think tank will be 2-3 May at the New York Hilton Midtown, and is open exclusively for CMP Fellows. Register here.

EIC launched the CMP Fellows programme in 2021 to recognise and reward CMPs and/or Emeritus who continue to make a significant investment toward the betterment of the events industry and the community of people working within it. More information on CMP Fellows can be found here.
