Greetings Fellow Electrical Workers! By now, many of us have become well-acquainted with the 2023 NEC, and after attending a few code classes, we're more efficiently navigating its contents in our day-to-day work. But it’s time to shift gears towards the future — believe it or not, we’re now less than a year away from the release of the 2026 NEC. While it may seem surprising, especially considering the short time we've had with the 2023 edition, it’s indeed just around the corner.
Keep in mind, most code-governed jurisdictions typically delay implementing a new code until a few months into its effective year.
Reflecting on the 2023 NEC, electrical educators noted it contained relatively fewer updates of significant depth compared to its 2020 predecessor. This posed some challenges when preparing for Code Update Classes, which traditionally have no shortage of content to fill the allocated time. However, with the 2023 edition, this was less the case. Currently, we are working with information from the First Draft Report of the 2026 NEC, and it's almost certain that the Second Draft Report, scheduled for release on March 21, 2025, will reveal additional changes.
One of the most significant shifts we’re seeing in the 2026 NEC is a continuation of the restructure of the code into 20 chapters. In my opinion, this streamlining effort will greatly enhance the code’s usability and efficiency. While some may initially be skeptical, I believe this restructuring will ultimately benefit all of us in the field.
Here are some key proposed updates to look forward to:
As you can see, significant changes are underway, particularly with the reorganization of many articles. While these adjustments may require some time to get used to, I believe they will ultimately benefit code users by making the NEC more intuitive.
Be sure to check back for further updates, as we’ll continue to share insights and highlights from the upcoming code changes. The Electrical Association will keep you informed on what's to come, so stay tuned for more detailed articles on the 2026 NEC.
