As we reflect on the past 4-6 weeks, our industry has learned that we have a lot of work to do as it relates to our governmental agencies and what they determine as essential and critical. As we all realized very quickly, Homeland Security hung their hats on the essential and critical categories and they really did not move from this position in any way. The American Fence Association sent several letters and several follow-up email, calls and tried every angle of correspondence we could to get more clarity in order to support our fence professionals.
What we did see was a fragmented state by state approach to this pandemic and every state had something different as a mandate. At first, I was puzzled that there wasn’t a blanket mandate for all states handed down by our federal government, but the reality of this is/was that every state really had a different level of this pandemic and each state did need their own opportunity to do what they felt was correct on behalf of their state citizens. Therefore, I fully understand the concept that a “one fits all approach” would have been very detrimental to our industry, because a lot of states that didn’t have the heavy hands of the state government placing burdens on them to stay closed were able to remain open and operational during these times.
What we determined was that as an organization, we must be more proactive with our governmental affairs and there is no better time to do so than now. The American Fence Association, along with many other fence and gate industry leaders, has come together to begin the task of forming a Fence Industry Governmental Affairs Committee to develop best protocols and best practices to communicate to our governmental agencies. It is apparent that most of these agencies need the professional input from the fence trades perspective and we as a fence and gate trade organization must be at the forefront of this movement.
The development of this committee will occur over the next few months as we discuss with other fence and gate organizations how to proceed and what the committee efforts will be. If you have interest in serving on this committee, please send me an email at tony@americanfenceassociation.com and let me know. How and what this committee looks like is to be determined, but I think we can all agree that the fence and gate industry must be better positioned in the future.
Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, Stay Focused and Motivated and BE THAT LEADER that your family, employees and company are demanding! KEEP ON FENCING!
