Extending ESSR spending timeline

After ASBO International has been advocating with AASA and other education groups for several months to the U.S. Department of Education (USED) about extending the ESSER spend timeline, we have some exciting news to share!

Last week, USED sent a letter in response to our request and said that while USED cannot change the obligation deadline for ESSER I, II, and III, they can allow limited flexibility for liquidating funds beyond the original liquidation deadline.

The original liquidation deadline for ESSER programs is four months (or 120 days) after the obligation deadlines (which are September 2022, 2023, and 2024 for ESSER I, II, and III respectively). In light of USED's May 13 letter, districts can work with their states to apply for a "late liquidation" extension of 18 months (or longer) after the obligation deadline instead, if the district can demonstrate extenuating circumstances.

If you'd like to learn more about this new flexibility, please check out our alert posted in ASBO International's Legislative Affairs Community.
