Redwood Logistics
Chicago-based Redwood Logistics announced this week their acquisition of Strive Logistics, creating a burgeoning multimodal provider with more than $1 billion in freight under management. The combined companies will operate under the Redwood brand with Strive CEO Ben Greene, President Jon Provus and the rest of the Strive management team joining the Redwood organization.

Steadily increasing pressures from both food manufacturers and retailers have driven food pricing up in the past 5 years creating a "perfect storm" according to a new report by Acosta. The Pricing Conundrum underscores the urgent need for both parties to work together to mitigate the pricing uptick at a time when consumers have a vast array of choices for purchasing food.

With slow, but steady economic growth, shippers could still be hard pressed to find capacity in 2019, but in no way will it look like years past. Experts believe shippers and truckers will return to a post-recession "rough equilibrium," but also cautions that 2020 may herald a much different economic outlook.

UK-based Wheatsheaf has acquired a 90 percent ownership of Purfresh, best known for its specialized temperature-controlled systems and cargo-monitoring software, Intellipur. The cloud-based platform offers remote control of temperature-sensitive cargo, and is used by ocean carriers, 3PLs and fruit exporters alike.

The spot rate market rose and stayed high throughout 2019, with the Atlanta to Philadelphia lane rising and then falling by more than $1 from its base of $2.50 to a low this month of $1.44 - a rate not seen since February 2016.

Supply Chain Dive
Expecting to be up and running by mid-2020, food giant Goya Foods will open a second warehouse in Orlando. A spokesperson for the company said the company had literally 'maxed out' its other Orlando warehouse and would build an additional 330,000-square-foot facility that would also be serviceable by rail.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court last week, the Teamsters Union sought to overturn the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's decision to exempt motor carriers from California labor laws concerning mandatory meal and paid rest breaks.

This spring, the FDA will finally begin inspecting large domestic and international produce farms under the Produce Safety Rule to ensure compliance and "standards for safe growing, harvesting, packing and holding of fruits and vegetables" in accordance with the FSMA reforms of 2011.

After absorbing nearly two years’ worth of losses, Elizabeth, NJ-based New England Motor Freight and 10 related affiliates filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week, a move that is sure to impact LTL freight service for metropolitan New York and New Jersey.
