Green fuel for waste hauler

Instead of gasoline or diesel, the recently constructed pump at the Groot Industries Inc. yard in Round Lake Park dispenses compressed natural gas, also known as CNG, which company officials say will offer a better long-term alternative for powering its fleet of waste disposal trucks.

In a first, gas and other fuels are top U.S. export

Chris Kahn, AP Energy Writer New York (AP) — For the first time, the top export of the United States, the world's biggest gas guzzler, is fuel. Measured in dollars, the nation is on pace this year to ship more gasoline, diesel and jet fuel than any other single export, according to U.S. Census data going back to 1990. It will also be the first year in more than 60 that America has been a net exporter of these fuels. Just how big of a shift is this? A decade ago, fuel wasn't even among the top 25 exports. And for the last five years, America's top export was aircraft.

Gas put squeeze on budgets for families and businesses in 2011

It has been 30 years since gasoline took such a big bite out of the family budget. When the gifts from Grandma are unloaded and holiday travel is over, the typical American household will have spent $4,155 filling up this year – a record. That is 8.4 percent of what the median family takes in, the highest share since 1981. Gas averaged more than $3.50 a gallon this year, another unfortunate record. And next year isn't likely to bring relief.

US: More Talks Needed With N Korea On Food Aid

By Matthew Pennington, Associated Press Washington (AP) — Humanitarian groups expressed misgivings Tuesday that the suffering of malnourished North Koreans would deepen as the U.S. pushed back its long-awaited decision on providing food aid following the death of Kim Jong Il. Despite constructive talks between U.S. and North Korean officials in Beijing last week, the State Department said further discussions were needed to assess food needs and on monitoring aid, which would be possible only after the 11-day official mourning period for Kim ends.
