Start networking early! All registered attendees, golfers and non-golfers are invited to join us for a buffet luncheon Sunday, February 24, 2013, on the ballroom lawn from noon to 2:00 p.m. In addition to our annual FSA Golf Tournament, for 2013 we'll have a "Round Robin Mixed Couples Tennis Tournament." This should be another exciting event and a chance to grab your partner and challenge other conference attendees while expanding your networking opportunities. Sign up early for an enjoyable afternoon on the court. New for 2013, and a suggestion from our survey, is our Shipper/Receiver First-Time Attendees Welcome Reception. This relaxed setting is a good time for first-time attendees to meet the Food Shippers of America Board and Planning Committee as well as other shippers/receivers. Last, but not least, is the expansion of the John J. Murphy College Scholarship Awards. For 2013 FSA has expanded the scholarship funds to three deserving applicants, so if you are an active member of Food Shippers of America, we encourage you to get the word out in your organization and submit the scholarship application.

Denzel Washington’s character in "Flight" drinks a lot throughout the film, but his portrayal of a high-functioning alcoholic pilot isn’t going well with Anheuser-Busch. Anheuser-Busch has asked Paramount Pictures to obscure or remove the Budweiser logo from the film. At one point in the film it shows Washington’s character drinking beer behind the wheel while driving. AB said that it would never condone the misuse of their product and that the company has a long history of promoting responsible drinking and preventing drunk driving. AB did not give Paramount permission to use their beer in "Flight."

Retailers and grocery stores are among companies increasingly using dedicated-fleet services as a shortage of drivers constrains U.S. trucking capacity while the economy heals. J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. (JBHT) and Werner Enterprises Inc. (WERN) are among carriers benefiting from an "accelerating trend" that’s helping to buoy the trucking industry, according to John Larkin, managing director in Baltimore at Stifel Nicolaus & Co. Dedicated-fleet services -- provided by a carrier that allocates a fleet of trucks to specific customers -- are "in vogue" because shippers want to eliminate the uncertainty related with procuring vehicles, he said.

The 2012 Surface Transportation Summit held in Toronto last week attracted more than 200 shippers, carriers and industry vendors. The speakers and panelists discussed a wide ranging array of topics, but one of the recurring themes was the need for shipper-carrier collaboration. The Great Recession placed tremendous downward pressure on freight costs and freight rates. The industry is still in a recovery mode. Carlos Gomes, senior economist from Scotiabank, the lead-off speaker at the summit, expressed the view that the economies of North America will be in a period of slow growth for some time to come. On the other hand, maximizing profitability and reducing freight costs remain the two top priorities for shippers in the 2012 Transportation Buying Trends Survey, as presented at the summit by Lou Smyrlis, editorial director of the Business Information Group. The carrier executives who spoke talked about the need for freight rates to increase to maintain the viability of their businesses. How do you reconcile these two disparate positions?
