When Kraft Foods announced it was eliminating its private fleet and would be relying on larger motor carriers to move its freight, approximately 285 truck drivers received word that they would be losing their jobs beginning in June.
Joyce Hodel of Kraft Corporate Affairs told Land Line the company plans to discontinue its fleet in three phases, beginning in June, and hopes to complete the transition by the end of 2014.
She said the decision to eliminate the company’s private fleet is "not a reflection on our fleet employees, who have done outstanding work."
Learn More... The third-party logistics provider, Roar Logistics, has purchased Legend Transportation Group.
The acquisition folds LTG, including its third-party logistics model and its online, less-than-truckload services for the retail store openings, mining, high-tech plant movement, gas and oil, and the energy industry, into Roar's operations.
The purchase by the New York-based Roar includes LTG's headquarters location in Phoenix, giving Roar two western U.S. operations.

A federal transportation proposal would remove restrictions on toll booths on federal roads, which could provide states like Iowa a new revenue stream to pay for road and bridge work.
However, Iowa officials say even if President Barack Obama’s four-year $302 billion transportation plan is approved, it’s unlikely Iowa would take advantage, at least not right away.
"The consensus today is that tolling doesn’t make sense in Iowa, but that it could as technology evolves," said Stuart Anderson, director of the Planning, Programming and Modal Division at the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Former Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.), a transportation advocate and expert, died in his sleep Friday night, Politico reports. Oberstar, Minnesota’s longest-serving congressman, chaired the House Transportation Committee for four years during his 18 terms in Congress, which spanned from 1975 to 2011, according to a report from The Hill.

Peco Pallet, the Irvington, N.Y.-based pallet rental service, has been approved as a pallet participant of Wal-Mart Canada, giving vendors the option to use Peco’s wood block pallets when shipping into Canadian locations of the Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc., according to a news release.
One of the country’s largest employers, Wal-Mmart Canada, operates 390 stores serving more than 1.2 million customers every day, according to the release.
