Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) released the highly anticipated report outlining “Creating a Win-Win-Win Business Relationship” between the motor carrier, the shipper and the 3PL. “There has been a fundamental shift in the past few years on shippers, motor carriers and 3PLs seeking to provide better service to each other. Supply Chain Dive Effective May 7, a termination of the 2013 Suspension Agreement slapped a 17.5% tariff on fresh tomatoes from Mexico raising the price from 21.69 cents per pound to 31 cents per pound. Those on both sides of the agreement - U.S. importers against and U.S. growers for the suspension – are still holding their breath as government negotiations on both sides of the border continue.

Transport Topics A U.S. District Court in Central California has dismissed a class action lawsuit filed by a former employee of U.S. Xpress, who said the carrier did not provide him with sufficient meal and rest periods. The Court said it had insufficient authority to hear the case based on FMCSA's determination that "federal rest-break laws pre-empt California's separate meal-and-rest-break requirements."

John Murphy was one of the long-standing members of the Food Shippers of America organization both as a food manufacturer and as the Executive Director. John spent more than 40 years in the transportation industry of which the last half was at The Borden Food Company where he retired in 1995. Upon retiring from Borden, John spent 14 years as the Executive Director of Food Shippers of America.

Supermarket News With a jump of nearly 2% over last year, Ingles Markets reported net sales of just over $1 billion for Q1 2019. The Ashville, N.C.-based regional grocer currently operates 198 supermarkets in North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Virginia with more stores slated for opening later this year.
