The province of Newfoundland and Labrador released their latest budget on May 31, 2021. It includes new and continued investments as well as partnerships with the Federal Government.
Despite a large deficit of $826 million for 2021, the budget gives opportunities in infrastructure projects and environmental development initiatives. It is also looking to invest $17 million to preserve and repair social housing. The government says these investments will help communities of all sizes reduce emissions and make homes more comfortable and affordable while working toward achieving climate change goals.
Of concern to the CPA is the lack of a broad-based approach to policies that are intended to reduce GHGs while providing affordable energy. For example, the budget identifies $1 million to help transition homes whose sole source of heat is oil to electricity. The rebate program that pays up to $2,500 per application should also include a propane option.
The CPA will be reaching out to Minister of Finance Siobhan Coady, to request propane be included in the program.
