On June 17, 2021, the CPA provided the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) with the position of the propane industry on municipal motions that are calling for the province to phase out gas-fired electricity plants as soon as possible.
In its submission to the IESO, the CPA stressed that while the propane industry supports carbon footprint reduction goals, “the CPA does not support energy policy determinations that could increase costs, negatively impact operability and reliability of Ontario’s power grid, reduce local and regional dependability, or jeopardize voltage consistency.”
The CPA will participate in an IESO sponsored engagement session on this topic on June 24, 2021. Over 20 Ontario municipal councils have recently passed motions calling for this phase-out in the past year.
The CPA submitted written arguments opposing this motion when the City of Toronto considered it in March 2021.
The CPA will continue to oppose any initiatives which would see the province’s suite of energy options reduced. Members will be updated on new developments on this file as they occur.
