Prime Minister Trudeau delivered Canada’s National Statement and announced enhanced and ambitious climate action to cut pollution during COP26 that was held in Glasgow, Scotland, from October 31 to November 12, 2021.
COP26 had four central goals: mitigating and driving down emissions to net-zero emissions by 2050, enhancing climate adaptation and resilience by protecting people and nature, mobilizing international climate finance, and increasing global cooperation.
Canada played a large role in some of the issues and announcements of this COP. Key Canadian announcements stemming from the conference include:
- helping developing countries adapt to climate change through finance commitments,
- signing the UK global forest finance pledge,
- participating in a press conference with Germany on the $100 Billion Climate Finance Delivery Plan
- welcoming 28 new members from around the world to the Powering Past Coal Alliance, which it co- leads with the UK, and commiting to end “new direct public support for the international unabated fossil fuel sector” by the end of 2022.
- New Global Initiative for Transitioning Remote Communities to Renewable Energy
- Government negotiators from nearly 200 countries have adopted a new deal on climate action on cutting emissions from coal.
Commitments made at COP26 highlight the federal government’s focus on increased action on climate change. CPA advocacy will ensure that propane is treated as a low-carbon fuel as part of the government’s focus on reducing emissions in Canada.
