CPA staff and Atlantic Canada members held several meetings in late November with senior government officials in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, as well as Abegweit First Nation in P.E.I.

On November 22 and 23, meetings were held in Nova Scotia with the Premier’s Office, the ministers of natural resources, environment, public works, and transportation, as well as with regulatory officials. Attending on behalf of the CPA were Board Member Darren Eavis, Atlantic Committee Chair Royden Boudreau and Vice-Chair Lee Johnson, member Ian Appleton and CPA’s Interim President & CEO Allan Murphy and Senior VP of Regulatory Affairs & Safety, Robert Loenhart.

In Prince Edward Island, Murphy and Eavis met with leaders from Abegweit First Nation on November 24 to discuss how the propane industry can partner with Indigenous communities as part of their economic development plans. Later that day, Eavis, Murphy and Loenhart met with Premier King’s Chief of Staff.

On the agenda in both provinces were program proposals that, if implemented, would expand the use of propane. The proposals outlined both the environmental and cost saving benefits by switching to propane for space heating and transportation.

Other topics of discussion included the success of the propane school bus fleet in Halifax, operated by Southland Transportation, the high carbon intensity and cost of electricity compared to propane, and the technological advances in the development of both renewable propane and propane blended with other low carbon fuels such as dimethyl ether.

Meetings were also held in both provinces regarding the requirement to license propane cardlock users and allow auto propane users to conduct and record training for the cardlock sites in use.
