On January 12, 2022, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced that Canadian truckers were exempt from the impending quarantine rule, an announcement that the federal government walked back the next day, stating that the regulations previously outlined still stand: all truckers crossing the border must be fully vaccinated since January 15.
Trade associations on both sides of the border had been pushing for a delay to the restriction, which they say would put additional strain on supply chains amid the latest COVID-19 surge and severe worker shortages.
Transport companies have stated that they do not oppose the vaccine mandate; rather, they dispute the timing of the decision and the impact it would have on supply chain pressure points. The new rule will still take effect for American truckers, who will be turned away at the border unless they've been inoculated.
About 10% of the 120,000 Canadian truckers who traverse the border may not be able to work border-crossing routes because they haven't been vaccinated, according to the trucking alliance.
The CPA will continue to engage with the federal government, ensuring concerns about the propane supply chain across Canada are well understood and any impact is minimized.
