CPA recommends rebates to offset heating costs this winter

In August, the CPA wrote to provincial and territorial finance ministers pertaining to the rising energy costs and opportunity to shield consumers from price spikes this winter.

Throughout the summer, CPA members increasingly heard from customers across Canada who are concerned about rising energy costs, especially as they look towards the winter months when home heating costs are at their highest.

In its communications to the finance ministers, the CPA suggested developing an energy rebate program that would kick in when a rate threshold is reached.

Alberta was cited as an example, which has introduced a plan to offset the cost of energy this coming winter. The province’s temporary energy rebate program will be in effect from October 2022 to March 2023 and will help shield Albertans from European-level price spikes.

The CPA is following up with the various provinces to gauge interest in the proposal.
