CPA working to ensure propane a credit generator in government policy

After seeking member input, the CPA filed comments on Environment Canada’s Proposed Regulatory Approach for the Clean Fuel Standard late August to ensure propane is a credit generating mechanism in the regulations.

As a member of the CFS Technical Working Group, the CPA was invited the opportunity to file comments, which included:

• Exemptions to remote communities – including incentives to switch to cleaner fuels.
• Full Lifecycle Assessment Modelling Tool – for assessing accurate carbon intensity value for propane.
• The interim credit reference carbon intensity for natural gas and propane (to be reviewed when the gaseous and solid class regulations is published) – complete evaluation on the full lifecycle of propane in Canada for an accurate CO2e number.
• Specific end-use fuel switching in transportation – currently the CFS is allowing credit generation from fuel switching in the transportation sector but the CPA believes it would be beneficial in agriculture, construction and other industries.
