The CPA has been advocating for the simplification of the Canadian Registration Number (CRN) process for over a year. Currently, each province has its own registration process, so when a new boiler and pressure vessel equipment is to be used in multiple provinces, it must be registered multiple times. The Standards Council of Canada, tasked by the Canadian Free Trade Agreement’s Regulatory Reconciliation and Cooperation Table, has been working with the provinces to address this issue and agree on an approach to mutually recognize design reviews across Canada.
Recently, the CPA became aware that Alberta had not signed the agreement and wrote to Minister of Municipal Affairs Kaycee Madu to identify the issues with the current process and highlight the benefits of a unified CRN process that would be recognized across all provinces.
Minister Madu has concerns with the qualifications of individuals conducting design reviews, and would like a standardized approach to qualifications for all provinces.
The CPA will continue to advocate for the agreement to be ratified across all provinces and believes it will encourage new technologies and equipment to enter the Canadian market.
