The CPA is making progress in the development of an industry-led propane cylinder recycling program. Late last year, President and CEO Nathalie St-Pierre and Ontario Government Relations Director, Marcelline Riddell, met with Minister Yurek’s staff to outline the proposal and seek their help in brokering the plan with Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks staff.
On January 9, 2020, St-Pierre and Riddell spoke with two of the ministry’s policy managers, highlighting the industry’s environmental stewardship history and reviewing the proposal. The managers agreed that the CPA proposal is aligned with the government’s environmental principles of industry leadership, circular economy activities and producer responsibility. The ministry is now seeking input into a new regulation under development, which the CPA will have the opportunity to influence this year.
In moving the recycling program forward, the CPA has posted a new staff position to support this initiative. CPA staff would like to acknowledge the help of Board Chair Dan Kelly, whose tireless efforts to advance this program with elected officials has helped it progress quickly.
The CPA will continue to develop the program and share next steps and information with members, provincial ministries and other interested stakeholders.
