On January 6, 2021, the CPA welcomed Ontario’s new Finance Minister, the Honourable Peter Bethlenfalvy, and introduced him to the work Ontario members have been undertaking with his ministry and the progress made over the past year.
In an introductory letter to the minister, CPA President and CEO Nathalie St-Pierre outlined the vital role propane plays in the province in ordinary and extraordinary circumstances, such as in the current pandemic environment.
She also presented the case for levelling the playing field for propane within the provincial fiscal and tax policy framework. Specifically, she pressed the minister for fuel tax parity through the reduction or elimination of the 4.3 cents/litre levied by Ontario on propane vehicle fuel. Reiterating arguments made to his predecessors and presented to the provincial Jobs and Economic Recovery Committee in 2020, St-Pierre offered that government support for automotive propane could contribute to a cleaner, more prosperous post-pandemic province. She added this measure would be welcomed by Ontario’s propane sector as a spring 2021 budget initiative.
