NEW – ON: Ontario government pledges significant infrastructure capital at Good Roads Association Conference

The Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) conference returned to an in-person event in Toronto on April 10 and 11, just in time for government pre-electioneering pledges.

The OGRA conference, one of the most important yearly events for municipalities, provides an opportunity for local political leaders and civil servants to talk shop and peruse vendors dedicated to building and maintaining local infrastructure, particularly roads and bridges.

The CPA must pay attention to the announcements and programs mentioned at OGRA because municipalities have considerable power over propane business operations in their communities. From enforcing seasonal load restrictions to fire department procedures, municipal authorities play a big part in propane companies’ success.

Key announcements 

• Premier Doug Ford reinforced his government’s plan to spend $148 million over the next 10 years building and maintaining local infrastructure, mainly roads and bridges.
• Labour Minister Monte McNaughton announced a $1.3-million pledge for an e-roads advanced training project sponsored by OGRA to provide virtual education to 500 workers. The minister indicated the program would benefit rural, northern and remote communities where access to training is often expensive and time-consuming.
• Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney said the province’s highway and transit systems need to be ready for increased demand as the Golden Horseshoe could welcome one million new residents in the next five years. Mulroney also hinted that a new transportation plan for eastern Ontario will be unveiled soon. 

The CPA will monitor the programs highlighted at OGRA and report back to members on those with impact and opportunities for propane providers.
