Premier Danielle Smith recently announced the Inflation Relief Act. Along with other measures, Premier Smith said the government will permanently "limit spikes" in electricity prices in winter and continue with a promised natural gas rebate program that will kick in if the price exceeds $6.50 per gigajoule. Of note, the rebate program has not reached the price threshold yet this year as of January 6, 2023; thus propane customers have not been able to apply for the rebate.
The CPA worked with the Government of Alberta to ensure propane was included in the Natural Gas Rebate Program and appropriate criteria were used so that Albertans using propane for home heating receive the same benefit as natural gas customers. The rebate program runs until March 2023 and is intended to support household, small apartment building, farm, or small industrial or commercial operation propane users that are not connected to the utility grid, as long as the propane use falls under the maximum limit of 16,334 litres per month. The CPA is pleased that the government is continuing this important program and we will continue to work to ensure this program remains a permanent policy option for propane users during the winter months, regardless of who’s in office. Working with other provincial governments is ongoing in our pursuit to have this program for propane users in their respective jurisdictions.
