On February 5, Allan Murphy, Vice-President of Government Relations and CPA regional staff met with Federation of Canadian Municipalities senior staff to discuss opportunities and advantages that propane can provide for local governments across Canada as they look to reduce their respective carbon footprints.

On February 12, 2021, the CPA submitted a comprehensive report to the Ontario Ministry of Finance as part of the government’s pre-budget consultation process. The CPA proposed the government adopt seven programs utilizing propane as environmentally sound, economically viable options to immediately benefit Ontario citizens, communities and businesses and spur economic pandemic recovery efforts.

On February 2, 2021, Toronto city council considered Motion (MM28.21) from councillors McKelvie and Layton recommending that council request the Ontario government develop and implement a plan to phase out all gas-fired generation as soon as possible to ensure Toronto can achieve its climate action goals. The motion was deferred for further debate on March 10, 2021.

At a February 4, 2021 webinar hosted by the Ontario Energy Association, opportunities were presented for hydrogen and a transition to net-zero emissions in the province. Plans were outlined for hydrogen technology development, including pipelines along new corridors linking Chicago and Montreal, and adoption in Ontario and across North America.

The CPA is challenging Manitoba's decision to only provide rebates to homeowners and businesses who switch to natural gas. We strongly encourage members to support our efforts and send a letter using this template letter to express your opposition to propane being excluded from the program.

On February 1, 2021, the CPA provided the Manitoba government with its 2021 budget recommendations which highlight the benefits of propane. The theme of the Manitoba government’s plan, Manitoba’s Protect the Environment and Deliver Green Opportunities, speaks to the importance of creating jobs and diversifying its economy while balancing the need to lower the province’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The Manitoba government has launched a second round of applications for grants to support the transportation sector with rebates for heavy-duty vehicles to reduce GHG emissions. Manitoba’s Efficient Trucking Program provides grants for fuel-switching retrofits for heavy-duty vehicles that result in GHG emission reductions.

On February 18, the CPA met with staff from the Environment Department and Climate Change Division for the Province of Nova Scotia to discuss the game-changing advantages of propane and ensure the inclusion of propane in future policy goals to reduce GHGs.

As members were advised earlier this year, Ontario’s Ministry of Government and Consumer Services conducted industry consultations on proposed revisions to the Consumer Protection Act, 2002 in January 2021. The Act governs most consumer transactions and establishes basic business rules and consumer remedies in the province.

On February 19, 2021, the Ontario government decided to maintain the shutdown, the Stay-at-Home order and all existing public health and workplace safety measures for an additional two weeks in the Toronto and Peel Public Health Regions, along with the North Bay-Parry Sound District. The York Public Health Region will transition out of the shutdown and into the revised and strengthened COVID-19 Response Framework: Keeping Ontario Safe and Open.

Job creators in Alberta now have an online service to verify the credentials of tradespersons and apprentices with just a few clicks of a mouse. The Tradesperson Credential Verification Service is part of the Government of Alberta’s commitment to reducing red tape. The service gives employers streamlined, online access to verify the credentials of a skilled tradesperson or apprentice.

The BC government says its new Weigh2GoBC program benefits commercial drivers by saving them time, fuel, and money. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure recently installed weigh-in-motion strip sensors in all six lanes of Highway 91, southbound toward the Nordel Inspection Station, including the on-ramp from Cliveden Avenue and the counter-flow lane.

On January 28, 2021, the State of Energy in Québec announced the 7th edition of its annual report, State of Energy in Québec. The report, compiled by the Energy Sector Management at HEC Montréal, provides a review of the Québec government’s efforts to achieve its energy transition objectives, particularly as they relate to energy consumption, transport and production.
