Many of you will have read the recent stories on gas stoves and their alleged health threats. Many of these stories contain misleading information about gas stoves and we encourage you to read the following article written by the Propane Education and Research Council for background information on the study and some general facts on the safe use and handling of gas stoves.

As part of Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) consultation process on potential methane amendments, the CPA submitted its perspective in December. The CPA worked with other energy associations to ensure alignment on messaging where possible and that producing members of the CPA were represented consistently.

In December, Premier David Eby announced his new cabinet, including veterans and newcomers to the B.C. political scene. The cabinet is diverse, regionally representative, majority female, and strategically aligned with Premier Eby’s focus areas of housing, public safety, healthcare and the environment.

Premier Danielle Smith recently announced the Inflation Relief Act. Along with other measures, Premier Smith said the government will permanently "limit spikes" in electricity prices in winter and continue with a promised natural gas rebate program that will kick in if the price exceeds $6.50 per gigajoule. Of note, the rebate program has not reached the price threshold yet this year as of January 6, 2023; thus propane customers have not been able to apply for the rebate.

In December, the CPA held several meetings with political and bureaucratic staff in the Ontario government to discuss the importance of switching Ontarians from using heating oil to propane.

In December, the Nova Scotia government announced its plans to address climate change in the province with “Our Climate, Our Future,” as well as a $140 million investment in energy-efficient upgrades.

CPA’s President and CEO Shannon Watt will be participating in the upcoming annual 2023 Canada Energy Update this Friday, January 27, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm EST. It is the Energy Council of Canada’s annual review and forecast webinar for the energy industry.
Shannon will be providing a recap of key events in the propane industry from 2022 plus a look ahead into 2023. She will be presenting around 10:20 am.
