Automatic Air Intake Shut-Off Device

CSA B622-14 – Selection and use of highway tanks, TC portable tanks, and ton containers for the transportation of dangerous goods, Class 2 requires that diesel engines on highway tanks and portable tanks containing dangerous goods of Class 2.1 and being used during loading and off-loading shall be equipped with an automatic engine air intake shut-off device. 

Compliance with this requirement is required by January 12, 2018.

This matter was discussed during the recent meetings of the Transportation and Codes and Standards committees and it was determined that compliance by January is simply not achievable. The availability of equipment to perform the work and the garages to complete it is limited, and the number of trucks in a fleet required to be taken off the road to accomplish this would be very high.

The CPA is developing an application for a temporary certificate that would provide members with a two-year implementation period. An update will be provided next week.
