Consumer beware – Refillable 1 lb cylinder kits sold in Canada

Print this Article

The CPA is aware that refillable 1 lb cylinder kits are being sold in Canada. The product allows consumers to refill their cylinders and comes with a stand for a home barbecue 20 lb cylinder and connectors. Consumers must be reminded that refilling cylinders without proper training is prohibited by Canadian laws.

The product in question (pictured to the right) is currently sold by at least one online retailer.

The regulation requires:

  1. Filling must be done by personnel trained for that purpose.
  2. Cylinders must be filled by weight or volume, which is not possible with these refill kits.
  3. The cylinder sold in this kit is approved under specification TC-4BAM and can be refilled, but cylinders known as a “single trip” or “non-refillable” cylinder cannot be refilled and consumers may not be aware of the difference between the refillable and non-refillable cylinders. Refilling non-refillable cylinders is a safety risk as they are not designed to handle the refilling pressure.

The CPA urges retailers to remind consumers that there is a safety risk for those not properly trained in the use and hazards of propane.
