UPDATE: Federal changes mandating use of electronic logging devices

Print this Article

Transport Canada (TC) has amended the Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations, including mandating the use of electronic logging devices (ELDs). The changes made will come into effect June 2021. These changes will impact federally regulated carriers, including carriers that operate interprovincially. The Ministry of Transportation, along with other Canadian jurisdictions, have participated in an ELD working group with TC and the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators.

Part of the amendments incorporate, by reference, the Technical Standard for Electronic Logging Devices to establish minimum performance and design specifications for ELDs. All ELDs will need to be certified by an accredited third party in accordance with the criteria set out in the standard and the regulations. In preparation for these changes, TC has developed an application process to become an accredited certification body in Canada and has partnered with Standards Council of Canada to develop and implement the accreditation scheme for ELD certification bodies.

For more information or to apply to become an accredited certification body for ELDs, please visit TC’s website
