NEW - Is your Electronic Logging Device a target for cyber attacks?

The use of Electronic Logging Devices (ELD) will be mandatory for the Canadian transportation industry starting June 2020 (for previous story read, Update - CPA working to ensure Transport Canada allows adequate timelines to implement Electronic Logging Device Platforms). While these devices are considered by many to be a helpful tool to log driver hours, a recent story featured in CDL Life Magazine warns users of possible cybersecurity concerns.

The article indicates that “Cyber criminals could exploit vulnerabilities in electronic logging devices, which became required equipment in most commercial trucking operations”. The story also provides some mitigation strategies and questions users can ask their ELD service provider. While the CPA has not heard of any issues of this nature in Canada, members should be aware of the concerns expressed by users in the United States, should these concerns affect Canadian suppliers in the future.
