NEW! QC: Changes to the Régie du batiment du Québec's tank location guideline for filling stations

The Régie du batîment du Québec (RBQ) has made changes to the Filling Station Tank Location Guideline.

The location of tanks at filling stations must meet the minimum distances specified in CSA B149.2, "Propane Storage and Handling Code", which is referenced in Chapter II, Gases, of the Building Code. These distances are given in Table 7.5 of the standard.

However, to install a new tank, it was also previously necessary to obtain approval from the RBQ regarding its location. With this approval, the RBQ verified that the tank did not constitute a danger to the safety of persons and the integrity of property due to its proximity to buildings, property lines or other devices or infrastructures. The RBQ thus reserved the right to require clearances greater than those prescribed by the CSA B149.2 standard if the environment or neighbourhood warranted it.

Such approval is no longer required. As with all other requirements of the standard, the minimum distances indicated in Table 7.5 must be respected, and it is no longer necessary to submit an application to the RBQ for approval. However, it is still necessary to inform the RBQ about the construction work carried out and to submit an application for the issuance of a permit to operate a new filling station.
