NEW – Federal: Pressure Relief Valve replacement schedule extended after CPA expresses concern over delays

The CPA is pleased to report that Transport Canada (TC) is providing an extension on the 10-year pressure relief valve (PRV) replacement schedule. The CPA approached TC for the extension in response to membership concerns on difficulties in meeting the timeline.

Following the recent provincial and territorial restrictions due to COVID-19 and consumer concerns regarding the in-house work required to shut down and relight appliances, members indicated it has been difficult for the propane industry to service all TC 4BWM16 specification cylinders with a 450 L capacity.

To respond to this unprecedented situation, the minister has authorized the filling of TC 4BWM16 specification cylinders with a 450 L capacity and expired PRVs by issuing a temporary certificate under subsection 31(2.1) of the TDG Act. This certificate takes into account the need to ensure the safe transportation of dangerous goods while providing the propane delivery industry with needed relief from certain requirements of the TDG Regulations. This certificate is available on the CPA website; all requirements must be adhered to when applying its provisions.

Now that this extension has been approved, the CPA will continue to work towards requesting provincial requirements for the 25-year PRV replacement.
