UPDATE – ON: Province integrating vehicle inspection and emissions testing

Print this Article

As members have been informed, the Ontario government is developing a program that would integrate emissions testing for heavy vehicles and the Motor Vehicle Inspection Station program, into a single operation conducted at provincial inspection stations by private operators using high-tech tools with data and diagnostic capabilities.

The integration will take place throughout 2021 and 2022 with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) targeting full implementation by the end of 2022 for users, and the end of 2023 for station operators.

Ontario Government Relations Director, Marcelline Riddell, has been an active program workshop participant and recently attended one session on program design and inspections for heavy trucks on April 27, and another on compliance tools and triggers on May 4. While the new program is focused on heavy diesel vehicles at present, the move to integrate these functions and the technological capacity contemplated for these functions could have ramifications for other vehicle classes in the future.

Riddell will continue to attend these workshops and advise members of any relevant program developments for propane providers.
