REMINDER – Federal: Transport Canada set to no longer require cylinder requalification document

As announced previously, Transport Canada (TC) is providing a bulletin to inspectors directing them to no longer conduct queries on distributors who are currently required to provide a copy of a cylinder requalification document to new owners.

At the request of the B339 committee, a task force was set up to examine changes to B339 and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations. The mandate of the task force is to develop wording that will remove the requirement to provide a requalification document to the owner of a cylinder.

The task force met for the first time on May 20, 2021. They indicated their unanimous agreement to have the requirement removed. They will edit the current language to ensure the code remains applicable to both Canada and the USA and identified that B341 will also require modification.

Once the wording is reworked in the code, TC will modify the TDG regulations to support these new changes until the new code versions are published. TDG part 5 is currently under review; it is anticipated that the changes to the TDG can be implemented quickly.

While changes take time, the CPA is confident that these are definitive steps in the right direction and will continue to keep members informed on the task force’s progress.
