NEW – Federal: Temporary permission for the use of gas meters without reverification

Print this Article

Many gas contractors are undertaking a mass deployment of new advanced metering technologies to improve their systems and provide added benefits to their customers. Measurement Canada is working to assist these contractors by establishing a policy to grant temporary permission. That would allow certain meters to remain in service without requiring reverification, as per the conditions below.

Under this policy, gas contractors must:

  • ensure that the integrity and accuracy of subject meters are maintained;
  • provide objective evidence to support the decision to allow the subject meter types, models and/or groups of meters to remain in service without being reverified;
  • provide a plan that includes conditions to mitigate the risk of inaccurate meters remaining in service.

Temporary permission is effective for a specified implementation period and does not apply to meters whose verification is currently overdue.

While this does not apply to typical propane installations, allowances for select locations where multiple homes are metered from the same propane tank, or multiple condos hooked to one tank, may be affected by this permission.

Members may apply by visiting the Measurement Canada website or calling 1-866-294-6572.
