The CPA has identified a potential key benefit for Ontario’s propane industry in the proposals identified in the next red tape and burden reduction package included in Bill 84, Fewer Fees, Better Services Act

The bill was presented on February 22, 2022, by Associate Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction, Nina Tangri.

For public sector and broader public sector fleets, the government will take steps to convert these vehicles to “made-in-Ontario vehicles, electric and/or low emission whenever prudent and possible”. This provision reflects repeated CPA requests for government to encourage low-emission propane vehicle use in government fleets, most recently in its 2022 Ontario Budget Submission

More detailed insight into how this program could increase automotive propane conversions in Ontario will be provided once parameters are developed.

Other interesting proposals in the bill include eliminating licence plate renewal fees and tolls on Highways 412 and 418, making it easier for small- and medium-sized businesses to secure government contracts. Reducing red tape when it comes to critical mineral extraction, and creating a new Centre of Realty Excellence to make it easier for provincially-owned properties to be used for affordable housing and long-term care projects, were also among the proposals.
